That EA interview where the Chief Visual Officer said they're using maybe 20% of the PS3's resources wasn't that surprising, since EA's business model is multiplatform, which seems to be at odds with exploiting one console's capabilities to the fullest.
Some of his comments could be interpreted to mean PS3 has more room, or potential, for improvement than the X360, especially if they try to use the SPEs more. The Blitz developer seemed to admit they're not using the SPEs as much as they could.
None of this is surprising since this is just the first year.
Then there is the conventional wisdom that Microsoft's tools are better and more conducive to developer productivity right now. Not to mention the architecture being inherently more difficult to get the best results? Plus, Microsoft's developer support is said to be way more accommodating than Sony's, not just in tools but actually working with various studios.
So maybe for the wrong reasons, PS3 has more room for improvement just from better tools, support and as developers get better experience with a less familiar architecture.
Or is it still way early to tell?
Which console saw the most improvement in this generation? Has people benchmarked the progression say from GT3 to GT4 versus PGR to PGR2 or Forza?
God of War and Shadow of the Colussus have been cited as examples of PS2 games which achieve a level of graphic performance which some didn't think was possible on the PS2.
Were there later Xbox games which similarly surprised people?
