Blue Gene Baby with 2TFlops built

...and wouldn't it be funny if Xbox 2 also reaches 1 TFLOPS as a whole??? :p

 heeehhee! IIRC that be exactly happen to M2 vs N64. M2 team aimed for specs that meet and surpassed Nintendo N64 Reality3D hypie hype. That they did with the M2, while ironically, Nintendo themselves, fell short of their targeted hypie hype! I think..

OR

another scenario be that PS3 is ~1TFLOPS....BUT so is N5 and X2! That right, THE TIME HAS COME RIPE for massive 1TFLOPS/65nm/SoC/whacaca. Nothing surprising.

OR

another scenario be that PS3 is ~256GFLOPS...nice but still no Tera...still nice...BUT i heard such parallel systems have low efficiency(~10-30%?) so be like realworld ~100GFLOPS...looking at current hi-end PC, be flopping around 30-40GLOPS...18mths later...times 2 plus somemore, since customised consoles be a small notch ahead, minus some efficiency....and we have come around once again...~100GLOPS. Around there, somewhere!

I thinketh!~ FLOPPY STOPPY HOPPY!

PSP business ... but if the final outcome of that was the radical view then I dont get your point.

many expected psone level performance... but some expected perf that placed it in the same class as the current consoles....

Chap, it's pretty much the time to stop talking like you stopped taking your Ritalin if you EVER want people to treat ANY of your posts seriously.

Zidane, well then ... neither happened and Cell wasnt in there, scratch one up for conservatism.

hmmm... 300k verts per sec, with minimum amount of gphx features expected(conservatives)...

33M vets with advanced gphx features given...(clearly consoles with less perf cough dc cough dc cough cough, are part of the current gen)

ps2 5m verts expected(conservatives)...

5-30m ingame verts achieved...
with stupendous fillrate, supah vs, and unrivaled to this day vram b/w...

It seems the conservatives have been owned twice...

And when I said Ati would begin rising, and nvidia would begin falling... something that conservatives clearly did not expect... it occured...

With that... conservatives have been owned thrice, maybe it is time that they got one right.... or maybe it's not yet time...

Let the flow of time continue, and allow us to see if advances continue to occur far faster than most expect... or if indeed they'll slow down....

If you want to count the DC ok.

As for ATIs rising star, well Im sure they covered their asses ... but I think in the end the return on investment for their console deals will not be all that spectacular.

Going up against Sony on a comparitively shoestring budget monetarily and time wise is not a recipe for success. Microsoft is out of a niche, and with even greater market penetration for Sony even Nintendo will feel the squeeze.

Mfa, there's still the last string speclation that PSPs VFPU is an APU

Speaking of PSP, if what I'm hearing is right we'll be seeing some more competition for it coming next year. Looks like a number companies wants to show Nokia how gaming phones are done "right" :p
But anyway, the real interesting part about it all is that at least one of the coming devices will use UMD (and no it's not from Sony).

Well there is being radical and there is being plain unrealistic.

I hope those competitors are either using PowerVR or a foundry with good eDRAM (ie. not the cheap ones). Otherwise they will have a very hard time matching PSPs power-consumption to performance ratio.

True, but unrealistic or not I still find it more logical then having two separate FPUs stuck on single issue design. (yeah I am not letting that one go :p )

As for the mobile machines, those I've heard about afaik aren't going with PVR. Can't really comment about the other stuff yet.

I also thought this could be a possibility (the VFPU/FPU being an APU) but an APU is perhaps too complicated for that purpose...128 registers, Local Storage...

Interesting, the use of UMD spreads...

UMD seems to be a very tiny DVD ( I suspect not only the laser is red as they announced but the NA is also the same one as a DVD ): 1 layer is 1 GB with a 60 mm diameter for the UMD, 1 layer is 4.7 GB with a 120 mm diameter for the DVD, the UMD has the ratio of data portion to surface area ( area = 3.14 * ((30 mm)^2) ) smaller than the ratio of data over total surface area we see in the DVD ( area = 3.14 * (( 60 mm )^2) ).

Taking in account the radius being half the one of the DVD, the UMD should have 2.85 GB for a single layer configuration.

If you take into account the UMD's data portion is smaller than what a DVD with a 60 mm radius would be ( if you look at the picture you see that both UMD and DVD have the same sized circular opening for the head of the disc tray which will spin the disc even if the radius of the UMD is half the one of the DVD ).

This has a double purpose IMHO: it allows for easier shock protection ( the head is quite large compared to the disc it will turn around ) and it should allow for faster disc access as the data tracks start on layers closer to the edge of the disc ( they do start farther from the center of the disc ) so in the case UMD used CAV technology we would start with faster transfer speeds than the very first track of a 60 mm of diameter DVD.

I think UMD will be cheap: Ken Kutaragi went on record IIRC saying that in Japan they expect to have magazines shipping on UMD for 330 yen a month.

Yes, reading magazines on UMD on the nice scren the PSP will have :)

I will be looking for licensees of UMD technology ( UMD is a propietary format, but they cna license it out )... no PVR MBX.... uhm....

eeh, maybe Ericsson? :D sony-ericsson based cellular phone with psp technology maybe

Why are they hiding 200MB from us? :p

:? must be for a secret program that hacks into every electronic device turning it into a Sony device, and in the end will take over our lives, our brains.... all in 200Mb

any benchmarks yet on the PSP? What about battery life?

errrmmm u'll be hard pushed to find benchmarks on hardware that still doesnt exist.... and battery life expectancy too (gosh that sounded like third world country life expectancy...)
