Best of E3 2008

I would say GeoW II as nobody expected so much improvement.
Maybe I would put Little Big planet on equity as the comments are so unanimous.

I would dismiss any title not coming in 2008.

My best of E3 is maybe Mirror's Edge because I hadn't heard of it before and there won't be a long wait on it (2008 release). It's really colorful and it's a different kind of action game, focus primarly on movement, both of which are refreshing changes.

Prince of Persia also looks like a refreshing update on the series.

Interested in Alpha Protocol but can't find a trailer.

I've only seen stuff coming out of Sony so far (mostly things I've downloaded from the Playstation Store).

RE5
KZ2
R2
DeadSpace
Mirror's Edge
Siren

These are the games I'm most looking forward to after seeing the latest trailers.

With all the Resistance, Gears, and Killzone talk, you guys are missing out on one of the best FPS shown. Left 4 Dead. It's definitely worth a look. Every single preview I have seen or read all agree that its just an absolute blast to play. Hopefully they'll hype it more so it doesn't just get lost in the wake of larger titles.

That game is at the top of my most wanted list. I'm not sure I'd pick it as best of show because it's been demoed so many times now. But yeah, it's going to be killer.

R2 looked real good also and Little Big Planet amazes every time its shown.

Resistance 2 lacks polish. I'm going to give Insomniac the benefit of the doubt , I trust them, but the game is so rough looking, I'll be very surprised if it gets the significant improvements it needs in a three month time span. Of course, the E3 build may have been a little older, so maybe I am just severely ignorant here, but when one considers the title R2 is going head to head with, there is a definite cause for concern.

My game of the show was Killzone 2; each time I see it, it surpasses my expectations yet again--the way Guerilla (and Sony Cambridge?) have nailed the gun porn and the "theater of war" element is goddamn jaw dropping. Visually, I feel about three or four other titles look better, but the environmental chaos, animation, sound, lighting, art direction and post processing filters bring real cohesion to the graphics and sell the impact of the visuals in an extremely forceful manner.
I'm so impressed with it, I often wonder if R2 should have been the game that got delayed into 2009.

Resistance 2 lacks polish.

You haven't seen Sony's E3 press conference, I take it. The trailer that came out of E3 lacks polish. The gameplay footage (battling the 300 foot tall leviathan) shown on-stage was extremely polished.

Yeah, I was actually thinking about that footage, when I said it lacked polish.
I felt they didnt do a very good job of selling the brute force of this creature. I'm talkin specifically about the times when Hale was inside of the building, going up the steps or walking around--one of the guys from Insomniac actually admitted that fire effects and some deformation elements were missing--I kept expecting the Leviathan to smash right through the walls with a fist or something and make climbing those sets of stairs more dramatic, but all it did was stand outside the building and scream. There was barely any sort of impressive looking structural damage.
When Hale was crossing that bridge, how come the structure barely shook when the thing smashed its fist into it? The Leviathan didnt even cause any sort of structural damage until Hale was a safe distance from it.

Every time I saw the Leviathan I kept waiting for it to smash a skyscaper with its fist, cause some sort of chaotic destruction, but I didnt see anything that sold the impact and devastation of a pissed off 300 foot monster. I saw some shattered glass.
It felt static. Plus the textures inside those buildings were pretty rough looking too.

The reason you didn't see structural damage at the specific point you mentioned (i.e. until Hale had already crossed the bridge) is because it was a scripted event. Nothing to do with lack of polish or attention to detail there.

Edit: on 2nd viewing you are right about some interior textures though.

Let me add Infamous to my list after seeing the trailer @ gametrailers. The early teaser trailer Sony put up on the Playstation Store earlier this year whet my appetite, but THERE was an example of a game which lacked polish. 4 or 5 months later and what do you know, looks like a whole different game.

Amazing what a few months will do ;)

That's a good call. L4D looks like one to the best of the year.

I'll add RE5 to the list too - some of the coop stuff to come out of the show looks like a fantastic addition to a great series. So that'll be my 2 "best of show".

Oh, and Duke Nukem Trilogy after the awesome trailer ;)

Jeez, can't believe I forgot Fallout3. My roommate and I have been looking forward to this one for ages! The new gameplay footage looked good, especially when body parts were flying all over in slow-mo :p

i was most amazed by the R2 leviathan battle, sure it does lack some polishing with the interior building textures and the action sequence. but damn the beast is the most detailed game character i've ever seen on screen, nothing even comes close to that. the lighting from the rockets illuminating the beast and casting shadows on its teeth simply draws out immense detail and cinematics. the San Fran sneak peak also impressed me equally well, cant believe a game can be that epic in scope.

some moments in the killzone2's 8min SP demo dropped my jaws. namely the "Garza and Junk face's conversation" part.
gears of war2 has finally convinced me to buy a 360 this xmas, gonna grab the bundle if available.
resident evil 5 also proved itself to be a graphical beast.
motor storm 2 is now the best looking off road racer period.
there.

Shattered glass? You mean those translucent grey triangles?
I agree about the texturing in this game. It seems to be lacking detail compared to a lot of other shooters.
