Battlefield 2042 [PS, XB, PC]

It's very easy to find if you have an android tablet and use the Game Pass App. Simply load up the app and scroll down on the main console page (the initial page for me). Notice the EA Play Game Trials sections at the bottom of this screenshot.
Thanks a lot!

I don't understand the people comparing it to BF4 and BFV in terms of visuals. This is a huge step up from those games, both of which I've played recently. Unfortunately that's about all it has going for it. The lighting and the shadows in particular have a very natural smoothness to them. There's kind of a nice colour grading that's unique to each map that's very filmic. Foliage, weather, explosions etc look fantastic. The characters look very nice and detailed too.

They really nerfed all of the nice movement mechanics they added in BFV. Not sure why they went back to the drawing board there and scrapped it. I'm wondering if they had to simplify the animation system for 128 players. If so, bad compromise. I don't actually notice that 128 players adds anything to the game, except that the maps are huge, which is actually kind of a problem. Leads to a lot of running in empty space. Battlefield was always nice in that you could use vehicles, but just playing on foot was viable. Even in the older games on foot was slow with the big maps. Now it's not a great balance.

Hard to get a sense of the gunplay. Haven't played very much because of connection problems and my friends giving up on the game immediately. I don't blame them. This is a disaster. Unlikely they'll have all of the connection problems, bugs etc worked out in a week unless there's already a big patch in the pipeline. Kind of reminds of the horrible state BF4 launched in. BF4 took about 6 months to a year to recover from that and went on to be kind of a legendary game. I just don't see the foundations for that in this one. It needs a lot of love, even for basic things like squad management. The shipyard map was a highlight of my playtime, but I just can't see people grinding the game.

They pushed the graphics, and have some really striking art direction in a bunch of the maps. But gameplay wise it feels like a regression despite some cool things like the real-time weapon modding. The wingsuit is a perfect addition. Just hard to find enough to like to spend $70.

Nice, so PS5/XBS gen consoles can now do what PS3/X360 consoles could do, but PS4/XBO consoles couldn't. :p Or at least one developer is willing to do things they could do on PS3/X360 that they didn't do on PS4/XBO.

What was it the PS3/360 could do but the PS4/One couldnt?

wonder what the res is on ps5, but looks sharp.

It's actually kind of amazing that the forest ground, in a game where you are often walking on it, is so much less detailed and complex than the forest ground in a driving game where you're usually driving over it too fast to appreciate it.

Still, it's overall a very nice looking game, watching a dust cloud appear on the horizon and start to roll in looks incredible in BF2042. The Tornadoes can still use a bit of work though. Where the dust storm looks great and mostly natural rolling in, the tornadoes look fake and kind of "constructed".

Now if only the gameplay and animations were as polished as the most of the visuals. :p This game possibly has the worst rag doll animations that I've seen in a AAA game in over a decade. Although they are pretty funny, so maybe they are deliberately bad in order to give the game a comedic effect. :p

Arbitrary destruction of every structure in a game with contemporary graphics (graphics comparable to other games released at the time). XBO had Crackdown 4, but they greatly simplified the graphics in order to help with the level of destruction that they had in the game. Heck, even PS2 era machines could do this (Red Faction). Or better to say that developers were more willing to play around with gameplay changing mechanics in PS2/XB and PS3/X360 console generations than they were in PS4/XBO generation consoles. Basically the cost of developement and the need to have great looking graphics were far more important than actually experimenting with gameplay mechanic changing things that might require a reduction in how good a game looks.

One thing, I wonder if the BF2042 version of BFBC2 maps also has ground deformation. My memory might possibly be failing me, but I could swear that BFBC2 also had ground deformation, so you could use explosives to deform the land and create your own shallow cover.

FH5 has more ground detail in 30fps mode, it's reduced a bit in 60fps.
you also have to take into account all those 128 players doing everything but the objectives, and detruction is higher too.
It's a question of balance with the same ressources available (for consoles)
For the tornado, it looks better on the PC, the upper part is missing on PS5.
and yes there is ground deformation in BF2042.

Yeah, I've been talking about the PC version. I haven't watched anyone playing the console versions of the game. And yes, for the scale of the maps and the number of players BF2042 is technically quite impressive and it looks good visually as well. That said, I haven't heard many good things WRT the gameplay or maps. I've heard a lot of "great graphics", "crappy maps", "WTF animations", "It's definitely a BF game look at the bugs", "128 players is a clusterfuck", "why aren't my shots hitting" etc.

For the last they know about bullet drop and stuff, but apparently the servers were having some issues on the first day and sometimes hits weren't registering. Also, those same server issues are likely why some friendly players weren't being marked as friendly players in game so some people were getting frustrated about why X player wasn't dying after unloading a full magazine into them at point blank range. Turns out it was a player on their team, but the game wasn't displaying them as a member of their team.

Pleasantly surprised so far on PS5. It runs pretty well and I personally have not encountered any bugs yet (or at least didn't notice any). Its a big difference from the beta (in a positive way). The game play so far seems very good and I'll keep digging in.

However, I hate the specialists or at the very least that they are not faction specific. Already have had several close quarter encounters where I was too close to the opponent to see the enemy tag and thought the person was on my team. I think this was a very bad design decision. I know this is about selling skins, but they should have made the specialists unique to each faction so you can recognize friend or foe just by the silhouette.

Also, bring back the damn scoreboard and let me skip the end of round cringey top 3 player recap.

They have a mini-scoreboard but the trouble is on consoles you're out of buttons to map them to on console without losing something vital to the actual gameplay.
