ATI & Nvidia Game Tampering??

Notice for Doom 3 how as a result due to Creative, Carmack has now had to make an entire 3d audio sound engine on the CPU. It would have been much more ideal if he could have had the sound card doing that. Oh and might as well give a link to the engine doing the 3d sounds for Doom 3.

Does this apply to the xbox version, especially since it is using the Soundstorm :?:

Yeah it does unfortunately. As far as I know SoundStorm isn't really that much more powerful than the EAX, but they don't try to hype it likes it better in 3d sound like Creative did over Aureal3D. Just nice you can hook it up to your receiver (which is definately a more important issue in a console which hooks up to your TV and likely your audio system which is more likely to be DD5.1 out there).

I'm just hoping Doom 3 might be able to do for 3d Audio what Quake did for 3d Rendering. Not that I really believe it will, but I can always hope.

Is the patch purely a SM3.0 patch, or does it fix other bugs in the game also?

If it is a required patch, there may be some cause for concern, if it is an optional SM3.0 showcase patch, you can avoid the slowdowns simply by not applying it.

IT seems to be an nvidia patch.

nv3x cards now have the image quality problems fixed with some slow down. Most likely due from moving from fx 12 to fp 16

nv40 cards now run sm 2.0 path and have a special sm 3.0 path.

ati cards gained no image quality and dropped frame rates .

Something is going on with the patch or ati's drivers .

We have to wait till crytek releases um release notes haha . To see if something diffrent is going to explain why they drop.

If nothing changes then we have to look at the drivesr .

Run the original patch with diffrent names .

If that brings up nothing then i have no clue what else we can do to figure it out .

The graph on page 2 is my doing. I'm 99.9% sure that I tested correctly and the numbers are valid for the demo I use. Just spent the morning creating the test rig again, after ripping it all to pieces to test something else, and the ATI card is doing 4X AA when it should be, unless my eyes deceive me.

I see a benchmarked performance drop using the demo I use. That's not to say that drop exists in all levels in the game, I don't think it does, but I'm certainly not the only one to report it.

That said, I personally find it hard to tell the difference in fps at the median setting without Fraps running. 115 fps average looks like 112 fps average to me, the peaks and troughs doing the demo are in the same place for each patch.

The drop in performance on the ati cards--
Could this possibly be that the new patch doesnt detect the x800 cards properly like the 1.1 patch?

If the x800 cards are running a fallback r300 shader code path like they are doing in the 1.1 patch there will be discrepancys - i know for a fact my x800 isnt recognised by the auto detect in farcry with patch 1.1 ,
perhaps they havent fixed it yet due to all the extra work for nvidia sm 3.0.?

Mondays going to be interesting IF the patch is released.

It could be something more simple, like a driver quirk methinks.
if it is a driver quirk its there in 4.7 beta 2s

Nothing strange about that... the patch could be doing something new that the driver interprets differently, hence the extra cycles = slowdown. I am sure ATI will take care of it if it is indeed driver-related.

yea not saying anything is strange just stating it so people don't expect it fixed in a week or so when the 4.7s are released :)

Well in all honesty, it's what? 10fps at the most? It's not like the performance plummets or anything :)

not for nothing but sometimes 10fps is the diffrence between playable and not playable .
