ATi 2900 XT 1GB DDR4 for pre-order...

I asked about the R650 @ TeamATi and got basically:

"You just never know when something unexpected might pop up."

I've found one reference to the R650 here:

"ATI Radeon X2900 65nm GPU is expected to be released around Mid August. The successor of the Radeon X2900 XT, the 65nm refresh version is expected to feature a lower TDP alongside improved texturing and AA performance and the inclusion of UVD."

I plan on waiting til the very end of August, and if no more information has appeared I will likely grab a HD 2900XT 512Mb for my secondary rig.

I would not count on ATi not introducing a refresh sometime soon.

65nm, UVD, 32 TMU's, 850mhz sounds like a nice refresh to me.

yeah pretty much thats what I'm thinking, unless they planned for increasing the TMU count earlier I just don't see that happening, looking at the way ATi seemed not to be focused on them in the first place.

R6xx does look like a rather scalable architecture though when considering the whole family, so I don't think we can rule out an RBE/TMU increase for the assumed refresh. We can hope anyway :)

As lackluster as R600's DX9 performance is (especially compared to G80), the architecture has to have some legs yet... Might as well try to get some ROI out of the design. The alternative is to "bet the farm" on R700, and I don't know that AMD is in a position to do that.
