Opening ceremony starts today at 11PM IST i.e. 5.30PM GMT. Sat/Sun weekend so I plan to watch entire ceremony. Hurrah! :p

Oh...joy. A month of TV-saturated adverts-disguised-as-athletics. Old competitors who haven't done any form of exercise in decades dragged out to act as "insightful" commentators. Thinly veiled xenophobia passed of as patriotic support. Countless SHOCK-HORROR news reports about drug taking that are as surprising as they are news worthy.

And to top it all off, the bloody football season starts too.

Thank God work kicks back off again in a few weeks time...

I think you'll find that the football season kicked-off a week ago.

There is proper football as well as the Premiership you know! :p

I hate anything ball-team related to be honest, so it's not surprising I hadn't noticed the season had already started.

I would like to watch following:

Hockey (not ice)
Football
Vollyball (not beach)
Track & Field
Wrestling
Boxing
Judo
Archery
Shooting

etcetc...

I can never be bothered with the Olympics myself - I find athletics incredibly tedious. I'd watch some of the team sports but they rarely show any on TV here in the UK. In the last Olympics, I think they showed about 30 minutes of highlights of the entire football tournament! This is just preposterous when you can see hours of 'walking' and other similarly impressive events. :?

I like all the sports, and in Italy we get one of the three national TV channels (Rai that is) to keep focus on Athens 24h/day. Btw, yesterday Ghana-Italy was a lovely match :D

Only thing I can say is that hopefully Greece will continue to prove itself as an excellent host for the 28th Olympic games.

One further wish would be that the world would get finally reminded of the true sense of Olympic games after all. Nations have (or should have) in reality nothing to divide and in the end it's more about taking place in such games than winning. The true spirit is to remind everyone that common grounds and peace aren't unreachable utopic ideals.

Does the destination count in a journey after all more, than the journey itself?

Iraq got more applause then all other nations during the opening ceremony, nice gesture.

BTW did you know 190 country incl. US supported last year November the 2003 UN agreement regarding Olympics 2004? It says ANY WAR ACT OR ARMED CONFLICT SHOULD CEASE FIRE DURING the Olympics.

And now, of course, we are excusing: State Dept says Iraq is not any of the mentioned case...

;)

BTW Dream Team been spanked by Puerto Rico - with 19 points!
US lost its last stronghold in Olympics, the basketball - it's no more "olympic sport of US", no US=basketball anymore...

Hungary spanked the Serbs in water polo - they (Serbs) supposed to be their strongest competitor... good, nice job there, my old country. 8)
They also got their first gold, in fencing...
8)

Bleh. Only olympics worth watching is the winter olympics.
What are you talking about? Min you, I suppose that the 2000 Olympics were held in September (iirc) and that's pretty damned close to winter in Sydney :)

Did anyone see Sth Africa in the men's 4x100m freestyle(/crawl)? They had outboard motors!!
