OK, so first hear me out - then please try out yours and get back - let's see if we can get some data together.

Firstly I was really impressed with the noise levels (bar the disk which is better but still much worse than PS3), I spent a couple of hours installing games but nothing more before switching off.

Next day I had a ~2hr session on Alan Wake - by the end I could clearly hear the console fans, and I could feel the heat from the side. I was a tad disapointed but it's still quieter than the old models.

Then last night I stuck the Xbox on idle to test the noise levels - after 30mins I begine to notice this whirring noise, I thought 'that's odd it was quiet last time it was on idle', however, upon further investigation I discovered that the noise was being made by the PSU! During this time the PS3 had also been on (in the cabinet) - now both Xbox and PSU were on top of the cabinet and the PSU was by far the loudest thing running.

I did a quick google search and it seems others have complained - one even posted a video of the PSU making the noise!

So, how about you guys? It would be great if you could actually have it on for a while and listen specifically to the Xbox and PSU seperately - the Xbox was very quiet - I had to put my ear next to it to hear it over the PSU which was 1/2 a meter away!

Are we talking 2 PSU types (like with the DVD drives on the old xbox360), is there a faulty batch, or is it just shoddy testing (and maybe a recall?)

The problem with polls is that there will be people who just vote for the sake of it, so please just type something to backup your vote :)

Oh, and did I miss any options!?

You could just make an option 'I don't have an Xbox / I think Xbox is gay' to weed out the for the sake of it voters.

I dunno, but from reading your post it sounds as if you keep your consoles in a cabinet.

Don't do that. High-powered electronics need lots of fresh, cool air. The PSU probably makes noise because the air the fan draws in is already warm, forcing the cooling fan to spin up more and work harder. This makes more noise.

So put your stuff out in the open. Your components will live longer that way as well, and as the instruction manual tells you, your warranty will be voided if you don't keep your devices well-ventilated.

Mine has been pretty quiet--actually more quiet than my MGS4 edition PS3.
It also appears to load faster than my now dead launch system as well.

I've played hours of SSFIV and Alan Wake since I got it and I have not noticed any increase in the noise level at all.

Thanks for the advice, but as I said - it's on top of the cabinet!

(FTR the cabinet is massive and the PS3 has plenty of ventilation)

Really? are you sure - I mean - you're used to a launch model which is REALLY loud, maybe you're just thankful you can now hear yourself think ;)

I wonder, could people also pop their PSU details here with their 'result' - mine is a rev2, not sure about the rest - can check tonight

Mine is pretty damned quiet, especially relative to the xbox360. I think my PS3 is quieter, but the xbox360 is about 3 feet from my head, and with game installs I don't really hear it. You can hear the fan, but it's a soft sound that I wouldn't qualify as loud in any way. The disc is definitely louder, but still acceptable, and not nearly as loud as the disc in my old console.

I can hear the fans kick in on mine after a bit of time, but it's nothing super loud or annoying. (DISCLAIMER: I like fan noises in the background, it's a mental comfort to me now. )

You picked up an Xbox360 SLIM? I thought you bought before they came out, or did you trade in the unit you had for the SLIM?

I played 6 hours of alan wake in a row this past weekend and had no noise problems. I sit about 3 feet from my 360 and i can't hear it over my cable dvr box's hardrive. I keep my psu behind my tv its above everything else but the tv and it stays quite cool. I love the fact that its not in the system like my ps3 which gets very loud.

Yup, My Slim and PS3 are right next to each other.

The new 360 is really quiet even when the disc is spinning. My PS3 used to be really quiet, but now the fan kicks in after about 30 minutes or so and is noticeably louder, although not as loud as my launch 360.

It never really bothered me, but I have noticed the difference.

Something's wonky with the percent calculations for the poll. :D Unless there really were 114.29% people voting as of the time of this post. :D

SB
