Any news on hdcp on next gen consoles?

Does anybody know or have educated quess about hdcp on next gen consoles, do they support it?. because I'm going to buy a rptv, which supports 720p, and I have spotted this nice and quite cheap Thomson model, but apparently it doesn't support hdcp. What do you guys think?.

The way things seem to be going, I'd expect them to support analog HDTV and possibly digital. Digital would almost certainly be HDMI and encrypted for any movie content. I can't see why they'd encrypt game output though.

Personally I wouldn't buy a digital display device at this stage which would not support HDCP.

Afaik there are plenty of dvi<->hdcp adapters around. Should at least allow you to play on your next-gen systems (yet probably no movie output...)

You probably mean dvi>hdmi adapter, if the tv doesn't support hdcp, that will not help.

If you don't have hdcp, you often get a scaled down 480i or 480p signal. HDCP has little use on a games console except for DVD/HDDVD playback.

they will support the lowest hdtv standard . its very simple . If they don't alot of people with hdtvs will be pissed

Who is they? Movie studios? And don't count on full fidelity movies if the TV is NOT HDCP compliant - these guys will want to curb piracy as much as possible.

Since this is a console forum the "THey" are the console makers . They will support the lowest hd tv form for thier games for a simple reason . About 80% of the sets on the market , esp the ones that sell the best (Cheap units) are only capable of that . We have 3 hdtvs in this house all bought in the last year and only 1 of them is capable of the highest standard of hdtv and it was also the most expensive 3k vs 800 for the next one .

I'm not so sure we will see movie playback at all in next generation consoles. You can get an pretty decent DVD player from $250 to $300 these days.
I just got a pro scan 4 dvd changing dvd player for 125$ , it has composite out too and my sister got a dvd player for her dorm room for 45$ that was pro scan .

So really they are dirt cheap

Errm I'm guessing, as far as DVD players are concerned, next gen machines will handle it just fine. Also, u can get pretty decent DVD players for much less than 300 quid.

We're talking HDDVD or BlueRay playback here...

We aren't talking about games. We're talking about movie playback. HDCP has NOTHING to do with games.

Now if you really meant that Sony, Nintendo, & MS would allow for movie playback on (HD)TVs without HDCP, then perhaps yes. But the question is, what is 'support' in this instance?

Is it 480i? Is it 480p? Is it, no HDCP = no movie at all? And you have to remember that ANY consumer HDTV set out there is capable of taking standardized broadcast signals and scaling it to some other resolution. So just because you have a TV without HDCP and you hook up a HD-DVD player and (maybe) see an image does NOT mean the signal is 1080p. It could very well be 480p. Afaik, the lowest HDTV quality signal is 720p or 1080i. So to be HDTV quality, the signal MUST be at least that.

I'm sure you meant component - not composite. Composite is just coax, RCA-Video, etc. Pretty much the oldest type of connection you can find on a new TV these days.

Once again the people making the movie discs are gonig to have the same problem. HTey have to support the lowest one . I highly doubt one blueray or hd dvd disc will have room to support a few diffrent res of the same movies. So they are going to pick the lowest version to support .

Problem is not every set supports the highest , so they are going to have to support the lowest , which isn't it 480i ?

Yup , my bad , its like 5 or 6 wires . Its really good , its a no named brand but it displays a great image .
