Fechtor believes NVDA's GPU will be in Playstation 3 20.22 +0.33: Fechtor Detwiler out with call speculating NVDA is slotted as the GPU supplier for the much anticipated Playstation 3 multi-processor console. Firm points to XBox2 being merely another iteration of the original, which has placed considerable attention on Sony's third game console. In addition, Fechtor highlights additional positive for NVDA in light of first time graphics power will be outsourced, displacing SNE's Emotion Engine.

This... changes everything.

Will Nvidia tech just be in a part of GS3? Or will PS3 use a full NV45 or something.

Ahem... how about nVIDIA getting a VERY cheap Cell license for NV50 ? 8)

Add to that access to Sony and Toshiba new 65 nm process... and possibly a good deal on their new 45 nm process... ;)

What exactly does this mean? Will the cost of PS3 rise (in terms of manufaturing?), wasn´t it a bad move to use a NVidia Graphics card on Xbox, due to problems when it comes to cost reduction? Or at least that´s what I percieved it as.

I mean, if this is true, then it´s fantastic, now MS has pretty much nothing to top PS3 within perhaps even a year (Top of the line CPU + Top of the line GPU isn´t exactly easy to overcome quickly), but how will this affect Sony?

I mean, it ALL makes sense now.

First you have the huge ass rumours of Nvidia being in PS3 somehow, with the CEO calling ps3 a "miracle machine". He hints it right there and then.

And now you have pretty much the confirmation.. I guess Sony has realized that they need help with GS3, I'm glad they are going to get it.

Almasy, Sony will still probably manufacturer GS3, but Nvidia will just help them with it. That's what i'm thinking.

So, the price went up for MS because they couldn´t fab the GPU themselves? That explains quite a few things...

Also is this official in some way? Or a very reliable source? Not that I don´t want it to happen, I´m just trying not to get too excited in case this isn´t true. Well, assuming it is, it will definitely be interesting to see how MS and Nintendo plan to counter what Sony has in store with PS3... :)

This is great news. I'm sure the GS3 would be awesome without Nvidia, but WITH Nvidia? It will be unstopable, way ahead of it's time it will be.

No image quality problems with ps3 now ;)

When did Sony say exactly they would outsource the graphics chip?

Almasy, the text us quite clear ... the part about NVIDIA is speculation, it states with certainty (misplaced?) however that Sony will outsource the development of their graphics chip.

I'd say more outsorcing part of the design, but Sony can manufacture it themselves.. so it is not completely... outsorcing and they never mentioned the GPU before... except the Visualizer...

After all Sony did not design the GS completely by themselves... they had the help of Simplex Solutions...

Guys. This is an analyst who believes nVidia will be in there. Let's not be too hasty believing it... though it would be very impressive and cool if it happened.

You want me to drink my bottle of Wine ( rose' ) or enjoy these news ?

Please choose option B ;)

Panajev is happy

I don't know, it goes against NVIDIA's business model. However, if Sony did somehow displace/secure NVIDIA for the next generation, MS would really be up shits creek. So it could be seen as an offensive move by Sony is this regard. Hell, it'd do wonders for Sony if they just wrote NVIDIA a cheque for $300 mil and said 'stay out of this console gen'. Very smart strategy by SCE if what I'm thinking is true.

However, like I said, NVIDIA has never been known to license IP before. It would not be in their interests to throw a wrench in their machine by tackling a foreign business proposition like this.
