AMD RV770 refresh -> RV790

When they announced the 4860, also released board shots which showed "Qimonda IDGV1G-05A1F1C-50X" chips. The shots later turned up on the amd site with the memory chips details photoshopped out. Sincerely hope someone didn't lose their job over that ;)

Wow, sorta surprised someone saw my post.

Hmmm... so that is where it came from. Thanks for posting that link, I guess I only saw the photochop coverup photos.
I heard that they received some of these samples quite a few months ago, so I was assuming they were testing them out. Good to see they are actually going to be using them.

Hopefully they will get some of those 7Gbps ICs, that were announced recently, later this year. One can only hope.

Because system ram is better with lower latencies than graphics ram.

More to do with the fact that system ram is cheaper to manufacture. And it's "good enough" for the job.

Add to that it's also easier to keep signal integrity with slower RAM speed for large amounts of memory. Especially when you start adding in more and more sticks of memory.

SB

Anyone still needing confirmation about the existence of RV790, just go check this PCI SIG page. RV790 has passed all PCIe 2.0 testing procedures of the Compliance Workshop.

Oh and this supposed last minute namechange is also interesting.

Why so conservative on GDDR5 clocks? I know it's been discussed but I haven't seen an answer other than maybe power consumption. :???:

just in case qimonda falls to pieces.

Qimonda's situation doesn't look good. The Inspur investment seems to have fallen through. Appears that operations will stop in april and unless an investor is found company will be liquidated  Tried to find a list of creditors to see if amd was present(ie for an outstanding gddr5 order) but could not.

Am not an expert on german law, if someone else could explain what is going on would appreciate it

Guess this will leave samsung and hynix still able to provide memory chips for the RV790. Perhaps makes it more likely for amd to choose a conservative frequency that both remaining sellers can easily provide.

I guess you mean 950 (750+200)

Hmm, they said "up to 200Mhz" I guess that 200Mhz will be for the "XTX" version. I guess 850 in my book would be a "sensible" clock.

Overclocking a 4870 to 850Mhz gives you about 5 to 10% increase overall. That places it between the 260 and 280 so a 950Mhz variant should be able to compete with a 285, albeit lose most of the benchmarks. As dave said we can't expect magic on the bandwidth, they need to have had some drastic changes (sideport) to be considered more than a speed bump.

I think 850MHz version would compete with GTX260-216 and 950MHz (if) would compete with the hypotetical GTX275. It seems, that ATi don't need a rival to GTX285 - according to Steam sales of this card are lower than GTX295...

But their current 4870 already is equal to the 260-216. Looks like the 275 would be marketed against the XT and the XTX is for the high end. Depending on the use of XT or XTX on a 4970X2 could actually propel it past the GTX295. whatever that's worth.

4890...850/3900.

HD4870 1GB is often equal to GTX260-216, but there are 2 problems:

1. Many reviews are based on quite old Catalyst drivers and the HD4870 loses
2. Many reviews are based on the game set, which nVidia provided to reviewers together with GTX260-216 and in this game-set (especially with old drivers) HD4870 loses even more

Similar situation to X800XT vs. GF6800Ultra... People rated X800XT (following to old reviews) slower than GF6800U and this opinion changed once the X850XT reviews (based on actual drivers) appeared. Many of that reviews showed, that even X800XL was close to Ultra performance - but without the launch, people wouldn't notice.

At two different retailers.

This could turn into a repeat of the HD4850 fiasco :!:

1GB memory is nice, though.

Jawed

A thing we don't know is if there will be overclocked versions (4900) at 900+ Mhz.
Some rumors said there would have been two versions of RV790, even if most of them said there were a 512 Mbyte version (normal) and 1 Gbyte version (OC).

If this is the OC version, then it could lead to a little disappointment.
