Ok, this is too cool.

Stuff magazine is running a rumor item on the possibility of an upcoming Aibo, the robotic dog, working with the Playstation Portable and Playstation 3. The rumor goes that the Sony Aibo PS, as they call it, is being resuscitated by Sony's Playstation division in an attempt to "bolster the PS3's arsenal."

The Aibo PS will appear with its own avatar within Home and react in the real world as he does in the PS3's upcoming interactive environment, according to the article. The rumor article goes on to say that you will be able to download new personalities for the dog from the Playstation Network and that the dog will be fully controllable using a PSP via WiFi. The dog's head camera will send a real world vid feed to the PSP's screen as well. The Dpad will control walking movement and the four main buttons will deal with head movement, which seems odd.

The old report about Aibo's demise is here:

Sony, don't forget about Lego Mindstrom and Sentry Gun too. ^_^

^_^ Somewhat true, but Aibo is a lot more:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIBO (Wikipedia)

The AIBO has seen use as an inexpensive platform for artificial intelligence research, because it integrates a computer, vision system, and articulators in a package vastly cheaper than conventional research robots.

...

AIBO's complete vision system uses the SIFT algorithm, to recognise its charging station. The newest versions are equipped with a Wi-Fi connection, allowing them to send the pictures they take via email. As a result, the Roblog originated.

AIBO's sounds were programmed by Japanese DJ/avant-garde composer Nobukazu Takemura, considered by many to be highly skilled at fusing mechanic and organic concepts, and the bodies of the "3x" series (Latte and Macaron, the round-headed AIBOs released in 2001) were designed by visual artist Katsura Moshino.

So, we can control the robot with PSP over net? Cool.
Aibo > Wifi > PS3[?] > Internet > PSP

All I need now is to mount some Cannons and Jatpack on Aibo, and my world domination plan can start rolling. :)

Woo! I was so sad when they sold off their robotics devision because i knew i wouldn't be able to get one in the future. Now there is a tinge of hope in the air, will it be powered by Cell perhaps?

With Cell it might become too brilliant though, wouldn't want it to learn how to extort us mere humans, videotaping our secrets and so on.

It wasn't sold off, the product line was killed and staff moved around to various applicable positions elsewhere....

hey do you work for Sony?

True.

If they want to build up PS3's arsenal they should with things people can buy otherwise it is useless.

They should watch Nintendo and learn that they should approach the casual consumer not the luxurious one that can throw thousands on high tech gadgets no one else can buy.

Show to the consumer what he will and CAN get not what he can not.

PS3 plus many unique features such as Aibo or Eye Camera at reasonable prices (prices the everyday consumer can approach at ease) can make it a superb buy. Provided that Sony does the apporpriate marketing and has the right price strategy.

I can only imagine how crazy kids and girls can go with Home+Eye camera games+Signstar+Aibo.

A new Aibo? If the price is anywhere near to the old one is gonna to be a complete failure.

While I agree that they should make it affordable so that more can benefit from Aibo, I also think that they have a few alternatives and may take several iterations to get there.

They may still keep Aibo relatively expensive (hopefully cheaper than US$1500). Afterall not many people need a mecha pet dog.

But I was hoping they will reuse some of the technologies for other useful but cheaper applications (e.g., Lego Mindstorm is US$299).
