Funny you should mention this because, last night on the BBC, they had another program in the "Inventions that changed the world" series and it featured the television.

Baird's system, AFAICS, displayed things in black and amber because it used a particular type of light bulb to generate the image, rather than a CRT.
 
Perhaps a bit of topic but do you have any kind of Matlab m-file that does 8bpp encoding from an uncompressed source image ?
Even in C it would be great, just asking for Matlab for the transparence...
