VS Code is available on Flathub which is set up by default on something like Fedora. Otherwise it is super easy to set up for anything (even on Debian). But yes, most distros does not promote non-FOSS software which VSCode and other is.

Its not just me, games used to be better

If you only look at traditional franchises and except them to be the same as before you will loose. But there are shitloads of games released any year and there are probably loads that should be interesting for you if you took the energy to investigate them. In the worst case you can continue...

Its not just me, games used to be better

So the claim is that there are no faster paced MP first person shooters that have a certain skill ceiling. I kind of doubt that, but I am not really into that scene. I mean, in the worst case you can join a server that still plays Quake 1?

So you have two points. 1: Canonical helped MS with WSL. I don't see how that has any effect on software running on Linux distros. 2: You make the claim that other distros hide MS software. Do you have any actual example of that?

Its not just me, games used to be better

The thing that upsets me from these discussions is that instead of searching out games (or other media) that has the qualities you look for people instead complain that popular games do not suit their tastes. I mean, there are other fighting games other than Tekken 8. It is the same thing that...

I don't understand what you mean here. What is the problem of MS' software on other distros?

Isn't the answer to this problem just to play another game that is designed the way you like?

The Snap server/app store is only run by Canonical, so Mint cannot really use it the same way it is used in Ubuntu. Everybody hates Snaps anyway, so it wasn't a hard choice.

The problem is that the Mint people does NOT build on the libraries and mechanics, they fork everything and are not interested in cooperating with upstream. If Cinnamon had be built on Gnome Shell instead of being forked they would have all the cool stuff in the latest versions of Gnome Shell...

If it didn't, why would a recompilation be necessary? /s I know there are no clear lines but as long as you don't have to manually change anything I don't consider it porting.

What are you playing now? [2025]

I meant "resolution mode". More pixels and effects!

    AMD RDNA5 Architecture Speculation

I would claim that recompilation is NOT porting. Porting only happens when you have to change the actual source code. Nobody would claim that the game is "porting" itself when it recompiles shaders after a driver update.

Is HDR and VRR seamless for you, or do you mean major version updates?

Regarding Mint, here are some reasons why I think Mint as a project is misguided: They have a really weird development strategy. They do not really work upstream and have a "patch over cracks" philosophy instead of fixing the root cause. For example Cinnamon is a fork of Gnome shell. If they...
