I've played practically nothing but EVE Online for a year now. :???:

The games auto detect mechanism chose "medium" for my machine(1280x1024,opty 170, X1950XT, no AA) and my frames have stayed over 30fps. As far as the graphics go at this detail level... I'd rather be playing something else. I dunno, I played the shit out of Far Cry, and this is more of the same...

Crimson Skies plays fine on my pc, but the text is unreadable like you say. Opty 170, X1950XT, 2 gigs of ram.
