Xbox360/PS3/Wii Worldwide sales data(from KOEI Japan)

They reported 'sold' for Q1FY2007. I'm assuming they made this change to hide the 'shipped but not sold' inventory from the previous fiscal year in the sold numbers this year. If they pick up some pace this holiday and follow it some channel stuffing in their last quarter, they might be able to spin 6 million shipped (FY 2006) + 11 million sold (FY 2008, LTD) as being equal or better to their launch forecast (6 + 11 million shipped), even having transitioned to a stricter yardstick for the measurement. Lookie us, we rock...

Yeah, I think going from "shipped", which was defined as shipped to distribution centers, to "sold" defined as sold into retail gives Sony the opportunity to report some of the later shipments last fiscal year as "sold" this fiscal year.

Im highly suspect of any 16mil number that comes out Sony's mouth unless major sales are sparked by a price drop before the holiday season.

Even if Sony continues at this pace and sales aren't in the 4-5 million range for the holiday season world wide then there will be no way Sony going to be able to stuff the channels to get to 11 million.

There won't be any 16 (17) million number coming from Sony. You just don't lie in your financial reports. It's criminal.

So, in 2006 they said that they'd shipped 6 million and planed for an additional 11 million in 2007. What to do when those expectations seem far from panning out? Easy... In Q1'07 you switch over to 'sold' and implicitly revise expectations to be 11M LTD. Just don't make a big number out of it (pun intended). Then, in your 2007 EOY report, you merrily state that you've sold 11 million consoles, stress that sold consoles - like you're reporting this year - are much better than shipped consoles, that you're pleased with the performance, and that the numbers are in line with expectations.

All truthful, and sounds so much better than reporting that you failed to meed your 2007 shipped targets by 50%. They're not to blame if someone else get the wrong idea, no?

US economy going down the toilet?
yep, i take it u havent being following the news over the last couple of years
eg off the top of my head
A/ euro just hit another high against the us dollar last week ( how much has the us devalued in the last couple of years, not good when the US gov owes how many trillion dollars )
B/ major housing loan probs in the US (which is a huge topic in itself, which basically stems from not enuf regulation)
C/ china having the gall (and the real power) to actually make changes to US fiscal policy
..... um now come seriously need i go on :)
short story its really a tettering house of cards, theres a election in the US in 2008 which believe it or not ppl are trying to win, WTF for youre only gonna inherit some bad management (which ultimately u will be blamed for)

If this number have some kind of trueth in them for Europe (witch I believe as the source is respectable) It comes in line with my comments saying that Europe is far from a given for Sony.

Ok they've done well in few months but now that the die hard fans are fed it will come to price and MS seems in a prety good situation to face end 2007 & 2008.
