A $249 core would be more interesting if they toss in a memory unit and swap out the wired controller for a wireless one. If they pack in a game, even an older one that wouldn't cost much, it would make for a pretty good gift for the holidays.

That would leave a huge pricing gap between the core and the premium if the is only a HDD.

Why? All that rumor says is that Sony has admitted their mistake and is now taking up MS's approach to unit pricing and peripherals.

You seem to be positioning that as something that MS needs to react to. In actuality, it's Sony admitting defeat and reacting to MS' initial (and current) strategy of 'core + accessories' rather than forcing overpriced 'Everything or nothing' units down the consumer's throats.

How are you speaking in definitive terms as to Sony's strategy on this, in the context of the affirmative of what's written, when it's the MS employee making the claims? Personally I'm with Croal - I just don't see this $400 SKU happening.

If it did though, well... I think above all it'd be a plus for the BD crowd, who doesn't care much for the HDD size, B/C, or WiFi anyway. It's just that on the reverse, cutting those things doesn't actually shave anywhere near $100 off the cost to manufacture. And thus, what is the advantage to Sony? They don't sell hard drives, and B/C isn't an add-on module - so all we're talking about potentially is Wi-Fi... and how would they do that, when the chip is internal? USB dongle? The scenario's way way out there... they'd be better off just cutting the 80GB to $400 and paying ~$20 more to manufacture vs what they would for that other mythical SKU.

Ms officially cuts HDDVD add on to $179, adds 5 free HDDVD offer:

Wow what a bunch of cheap mofo's LOL.

I expected a cut to at least $149 this fall, if not $99 as bad as HDDVD is getting pounded by Blu Ray, the format needed some drastic help.

I'm still waiting for the price drop of the add-on to 100 AMERICAN DOLLARS + free HD-DVD movies (ie. Serenity and Rundown)

Do that and they could still survive longer (where Blu-ray is leading over it atm)

Seriously, if microsoft had wanted to give HDDVD a serious push they needed to do $99 this holiday.

I could be wrong but I doubt it costs much more than that to manufacture. It's just a bare drive with all the processing handled by the 360.

$50 doesnt seem like it really expands the pool of potential buyers by any relevant amount unless they drop the price AND goose the existing models with HDMI, larger drives, or a nominal memory card in the core.

And the component output cables. In this scenario, I would also expect a corresponding cut on the premium of around $70, making it $329 (and a $80 cut from the Elite to $399).

So $80 difference for 20GB HD & component cable seems fair... until MS goes all HDMI.

A $50 drop will help, but I think they should be more aggressive. $229 Core w/ memory card and wireless controller instead of wired, and a $299 Premium would probably work out well IMO.

Work out well for consumers, maybe not so much for their bottom line.

They may also want to see if preorders for Halo3 accompany spike in sales leading up t the release.

Personally, I'd be waiting on "new model" much more than a price cut anyway. The 360 is still well-priced, still has breathing room in front of the PS3 (especially since the PS3 will be "wobbling" a bit as they sell out of the 60GB stock and before they set up the new price point and package[s?] for the holidays), and hasn't shown a huge die-off.

They may want to have the Core pull alongside the Wii and close in the gaps for the holiday sellout, but I'm not sure why they'd whip out a price drop now and lose both word of mouth and competitive edge going into the holidays--especially while there are no large games to play this off of.

Don't forget the licensing fees for the codecs in the playback software (HD-DVD has more mandatory codecs than BR when you include audio formats) and the fact that the retailer has to actually make some money on the sale (meaning MS's cut isn't the full $179). MS is probably still making a profit on them, but I don't think it's as much as some may think.

The HD-DVD add-on consists of the drive itself, external case, power supply, usb hub, usb to serial ata converter, 192MB of Flash Memory, universal media remote control, usb cable, king kong hd-dvd, and software. Plus R&D costs, licensing, assembly, packaging, support infrastructure, shipping, and marketing.

ie. probably not apples-to-apples to compare against other plain OEM optical drives.

Does it really contain a Flash? I thought it uses HDD as its persistent storage. I think probably it's an OEM of this drive and its OEM external drive models from other companies are sold around $200.

BTW things are not exactly going well for HD DVD recently.

Yep! It can't rely on the HD as persistent storage because there are 360's without them. You can actually manage the memory in it using the dashboard like any other memory card or hard drive.
