Xbox2 based on R500?

The lastest rumors from Teambox:

"This graphic chip has been in design for longer than a year at ATI’s Marlborough, Mass. office and much like the Xbox’s nVIDIA GPU, the Xbox 2 graphic chip will also be a custom silicon that will have the R500 as its core technology.

This graphic chip is aimed at the next version of the DirectX API, most probably called DirectX 10, which is already in development and simply code named: DirectX/LH. LH stands for Longhorn, the next major desktop Windows release, which will follow Windows XP.

This same source also told us: “Microsoft chose ATI not just because the publicly known problems with nVIDIA but also because current technology shows ATI is the real winner when it comes to pixel shaders performance.â€￾ Something that is correct, as several publications have put in evidence that ATI’s Radeon 9800 Pro surpasses the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra in most Pixel Shaders 2.0 benchmarks."

I seriously doubt the source in the article is directly from ATI itself!

I'm sure Microsoft has LOTS of reasons for making the decision they did. Certainly PS2.0 performance now doesn't have much bearing on, say, PS4.0 performance two generations from now. I think it may have more to do with the nature of the IP licensing.

At any rate, yes it seems like the Xbox2 GPU will be based on the R500. Which is essentially what people have been saying since MS revealed they'd be going with ATI. ^_^ I'm more interested to know what ATI will be Intellectualizing, as it were, and who's doing what fabbing.

Isnt longhorn due around XBox2? and if not, its microsofts system so i think they would give it a special edge against the competition by including P/VS 4.0. R300 came out before DX9 why wouldnt R500 come out with DX10?

I rather think Xbox2 and Longhorn will be coming out in close proximity to each other, yes. ^_^ Not to mention they'd build the capabilities into the hardware regardless of DX10 actually being launched yet, because--uh--it would be rather foolish NOT to. Especially on a console that won't get upgrades every 36 seconds.
