Xbox 360 wireless adapter too much? Simple solution inside.

$100 for a wireless adapter? MS must be joking! That's highway robbery!

I must have read that at least a thousand times in the past week, and every word of it is true. The official 360 wireless adapter is simply way overpriced.

But what alternative do we have?

How about a wireless to ethernet bridge that only costs $40 or less? Netgear, Linksys, Hawkings, and many other companies make simple bridges that receive wireless, and convert to Ethernet, which would bypass the 360's security on peripherals. As far as the 360 would know, it would be on a wired network.

So, buy the MS wireless adapter for $100, or go with a 3rd party bridge for $35-$40.

Tough choice, eh?

Niiiiice

As for me: PS3, Xbox 360, either way--wired all the way! My mad skillz cannot be compromised by 10ms of additional latency ;)

Does PC FPS skills transfer well to a game pad :|

My house is fully wired too. This wireless issue doesn't effect me, but it seems like a fairly trivial matter. There are simple workarounds available.

It is ironic though that the same people who use a wireless network with their current Xbox are worried about the price of the wireless adapter. I don't guess it occured to them to use the exact same setup they use now with their non-wireless Xbox.

I would like to say that based on my experience, yes. However, that would imply that I am skilled on either system, rather than thoroughly mediocre on both.

How do you know what will bypass the security? I've been wondering myself what will and what wouldn't be enforced.

There's NO security involved. The Xbox 360 has a simple ethernet port in the back, you can use ANY WIRELESS bridge and Voila! your Xbox 360 is wireless! People make a big deal out of nothing. Xbox 1's official Wireless adapter was $99 aswell! But I bought a linksys one that works flawlessly and was only $50.

I guess I would use my existing Linksys WET-11 bridge that my Xbox is currently plugged into.

I guess what I meant was...

What was preventing MS from enforcing their security by checking for a "licensed" network product? I know it would be a pain in the ass for all of us...I just didn't want to assume all network products would work.

For instance, is it beyond the realm of possibility for MS to require their licensed Wireless Bridge or Network Adaptor?

The point is that since a wireless bridge plugs in through the ethernet port, there's no way for the Xbox to know whether or not the thing is licensed (or even that it's going through a bridge). Now, the USB wi-fi adapter is another guess entirely.

EDIT: To further clarify, how is the Xbox to know that I've directly plugged it into my cable modem, versus plugging it directly into my router, versus plugging it into a bridge?

These are great, small and cheap. You should be able to buy one for less than $30, they're smaller than a pack of cigarettes and have great range. No hassles.

Because in this case, the 360 wouldn't even know the bridge was there. The link from the 360 to the bridge would be using an ethernet cable, so the 360 would think it was connected to a common router or cablemodem.

there any bridges from linksys that also boost your signal ? Would be nice

All bridges boost the signal. That's their primary use is to extend a hot point. They have the nam "brige" because thats what they do, they bridge a gap in the wireless network.

The fact that they can be used as a receiver and output to ethernet is just a side benifit.

Just a word of warning, watch out for the quality and the max speed of the bridge. I'll feel bad for the frustrated gamer thats getting lag and choppy gameplay (Online) because they thought they found a deal on a bridge.

I would love a Pre-N Router with a Pre-N bridge (Mimo)...ugh..god..i'm such a networking (Hardware) junky. Check this puppy out...

Belkin Wireless Pre-N (Mimo) Router

Expensive...but yeah...I WANT IT :devilish:

PS: MIMO stands for "Multiple Input/Multiple Output"

Pre-N, wouldn't touch it. At least I don't have a need for it right now and the lack of an agreed upon standard means you could be stranded once it's ratified (even though Belkin is claiming it's upgradeable - I just wouldn't want to deal with that hassle if Belkin has to swap parts out).

True. But the whole reason I have avoided wireless (for my main PC) is simply because of the 54Mbit connection. I often transfer between my server and my PC and I just like the extra speed. Guess i'm going to have to stick with that good ol blue wire running across the hallway
