Worried About My 360

Hi, I have the core unit (The only ones they had left), but I am concerned about the hot air from the vents and the heat of the disc after oh say, 30mins to an hour of play. The harddrive looks like it blocks even more, seemingly precious, ventilation which is why im reluctant to add it.

1) Should I add a HDD and How should it stand (Horiz. / Vert.) For best cooling performace with or without one attached?

2) Will Microsoft Replace the overheated units even without the 2-year service plan in the package that expires if not sent within 10 Days?

Vertical is easily the best way to have the unit, with or without harddrive attached. Assuming you can give enough clearance on either side of the unit. This should give the most ventilation. Most of the 'hot' air is vented out the back of the case by the fan, so be sure to give some clearance from any wall.

Thanks Alpha.... any word on Replacement if it does happen?

I have no idea about MS policy on their warranty. There is a lot of talk that the overheating a psu issue, people have found that swapping psu with another xbox360 allievated their overheating, if that's the case for the units it should be a relatively simple process.

My premium system while warm, is no where near as warm as my Gateway laptop. The DVD's are never hot, barely even warm for that matter and the system doesn't get hotter the longer it's on (which so far tends to run almost all day these last couple of holiday days).

I'd get a harddrive if you want the backwards compatibility and the ability to download game demos from Xbox Live marketplace (for free....I've downloaded Kameo, NBA Live 06 and Need for Speed Most Wanted).

How long is our manufacturers warranty for the 360?
90 days......at least part of it.

I've put my box/papers away...but most likely it's 1 year parts and 90 days labor like most electronics.

It's 90days, but there was a thing in the box saying something about extending to 2 years. I haven't looked at it yet.

For the small price of $59.95 you can extend the warranty to two years (or maybe it was $49.95.....I don't remember).

Say what?

In Sweden we have a 2-year warranty according to the law.

A $50 warranty for only 2 years? Sounds like a rip off. Is this normal for consoles since I don't own any? Shouldn't they come with 1~3 yr warranty as standard like most retail computer parts do?

Check out number 5!

We will comfort you with a replacement, including the latest features.

I'm definitely getting this now, especially if they come out with an HD-DVD version, I'll just use this to upgrade it in two years ;)

I actually did this on my original Xbox.

It's not a bad deal, peace of mind for two years. They make it real easy. Like I think if you call with a problem, they send you a shipping box prepaid next day air or something. So you dont even have to hassle with trying to pack your Xbox into a random box or it's original package or anything, they send you the damn box. And turnaround time was fast if I recall.

I haven't messed with it on my 360 though, and probably wont.

Huh, it looks like the 360 service plan they just send you a new unit, without even messing with repairs. I wouldn't doubt it. Probably one of those it's less trouble to replace than repair deals. Or maybe they refurbish the repaired units and sell them later at a discount somewhere?

One thing with original Xbox is like throughout half that dang things lifespan at various times they were hard to find on the shelves.

So it's not as simple as "I'll just buy another if it breaks" (besides cost, of course).

Dont know if 360 will be the same way but it will be through Dec 25 that's for sure.
