Worldwide Wii Day (Sep 14/15): the official thread *Released Nov 19 for $250 (US)*

At the price it’s going for in the West, Sony with PS2 must be very confident of trying to secure the very market that Nintendo is aiming its sights at; people who currently don’t play games and women.

Of course Wii will sell to its core Nintendo loyalist but outside that, bar a freak fad occurring, I cannot see how at that price point it will appeal more to the “new target marketâ€￾ more than PS2 with SingStar/Buzz/Eyetoy could (much cheaper to boot).

However you cannot say anything at this point, network effects are huge in this industry and just like Japan a sudden DS style craze could hit fuelling a meteoric rise for the Wii.

I'm talking about what the regular consumer will pay in store, which is far more meaningful than what 'we' could get it for.
There's 512MBs of integrated, non-removable flash memory in the Wii console.
Your regular consumer would be well advised to just take advantage of that.

Also, the graphics we're seeing aren't too bad, but do these represent as good as it gets on Wii? On XB360 and PS3, we know there's loads of room to grow. However, Wii is supposedly working like a GC, using GC tools. It sounds like there's little room for advancement. It's all there from the beginning.
There's plenty of room to improve on on Wii, as dev kits get more accurate to Wii hardware. Also, let me remind you that GC wasn't exactly "maxed-out".

The launch price is fine if you want a Wii. The problem I have with it is that it seems very clunky for controlling traditional genres. I'll pick one up for the quirky Wiimote games that actually could not be done with a traditional controller, but I still can't see this being the meat and potatoes console for any serious action gamer. 18-34 year old males want Halo 3, GTA4, MGS4, EA Sports with the latest graphics, Gran Turismo, Forza, etc... and this is still the bulk of the market right now.

Wii's controller wouldn't be clunky with any of the games you just mentioned AFAICS.. If you want a good example of a genre of game that would likely be extremely hard to pull off well on Wii's controller then look no further then Football (International not North American). IMO this is one of the few kinds of game genre's were I may need another system to get my fix.

We have already heard that Super Smash Bros: Brawl, which is a Wii game, will still be built around the conventional controller. It's the same issue really. The game wouldn't feasibly work with the Wiimote.

You may yet get all those classic genres on the Wii, you'll probably just need to get an extra controller.
(the Wii has four ports for the same old Gamecube controllers)

Yep, and why should devs start to max it out now? it's crystal clear that they are not aiming at having better graphics.

But there's no need for a conventional controller to get all of the classic genre's mentioned on Wii (why would you need a classic controller for a racing game or first person shooter for instance?). Smash Brothers is simply one of the very few exceptions. Which is why its the only Wii game so far that will need a standard controller, out of all of the current crop of announced Wii games (which includes most classic genre's already).

no no, what you can say is that they're not aiming at the ps3 level of graphics, which does not mean they are not aiming for better graphics compared to the previous gen : )

How do you expect them to max out at launch? Has ANY console ever have?

Honestly, I think you're having unrealistic expectations here...

Let put it this way: If I would develop a Wii title I would not stop sleeping at night to think how to achieve a better graphics. Yes, I would work to have a nice looking game but graphics would be one of my last worries. People will not but it for the fantastic graphics, it has to be ok, not amazing. That's why only few devs will actually push it for real. It already happened with the Gamecube and this tendency is going to be even stronger now.

What? I was not talking about the launch, I was talking about its entire lifetime. Games graphic will improve over time
as it has already happened in the past with every other console, that's a given.

Do you think that devs overall prefer to work under those conditions, where grfx are not important? Sounds like you would actually get some sleep if you were developing for Wii... ;)

It doesn't even play DVD's?
I'm rather miffed about that myself, it would make perfect sense to have DVD playback in Wii. The unit is tiny, looks like a piece of slick hifi gear, has a full-size dual layer DVDROM drive, and THE CONTROLLER IS A WIRELESS REMOTE... It's like, DUH!

I would have suggested A button to be play/pause. D-pad left and right skips chapters forwards and back, D-pad down is stop. Home is the DVD menu button, + and - could, well, adjust sound level maybe I dunno what they're meant to do really.

Trigger button would bring up an on-screen bar and shift the wiimote into pointer mode so that you can control fast forward and rewind by angling the wiimote left or right.

This would work rather well I think. :)

I have some hopes Nintendo will come to their senses and release a DVD player as a downloadable software upgrade, perhaps at a (preferably low) cost. Like I said, it could only make sense, I almost can't believe they didn't include one as standard. The excuse "everybody has one already" is LAME. Everybody doesn't, and even if they do, many maybe don't want an extra box lying there collecting dust. Two birds with one stone and all, you know, Nintendo?

I myself hope Nintendo releases a range of standalone wireless classic controllers, they could make a fortune selling those old NES and SNES pads updated with bluetooth... :D

The "classic pad" that they've shown looks like shit frankly, and I hate the idea I have to connect it to the wiimote and have that thing lying around like a second dick in my lap just to power it.
