Wondering about the nice looking Red Steel E3 trailer, realtime or offline rendered ?

the very nice looking Red Steel trailer still has me wondering.

was this offline rendered / prerendered CGI / a render target, or was it realtime running on a modern ATI graphics card?

obviously the realtime Wii graphics are a noticable/significant step down in quality, and that seems to make many people automatically assume that the nicer looking trailer was render target / prerendered CG / offline rendered.

while the nice looking trailer looks like a signicant leap over the Wii gameplay version, the nice looking trailer certainly IMO doesn't look like prerendered CG, it looks like it was running on a modern ATI card.

realtime Wii version

you're thoughts? I know this has been discussed in other threads but i don't feel like spending the time looking for well-informed replies on the subject and felt this deserved its own thread.

Red Steel is one of my most anticipated Wii games. the nice looking E3 trailer not just had better graphics, but seemed more convincing from a gameplay standpoint. lets hope the development team has been using Hollywood
and the 3x increase in 1T-SRAM RAM that Wii has over Gamecube, plus another 4-6 months in development time to make this one of the best Wii experiences. I would not mind waiting untik Q1 or Q2 2007 for something that matches the nice looking trailer with refined precise fine-tuned polished controls/gameplay.

My thoughts are actually that I can live with the graphics so long as the damned remote works as advertised. :)

(Can ya tell which bit I'm worried about with the Wii launch? ;) )

I believe he's trying to start a discussion comparing the graphics of the two versions, which I agree there is a difference.

The big thing to me is the original preview looked like it had some AA applied, the latest really looks like it doesn't.

My point was just airing my angst about the controller, I'm really hoping it works well but fear it will be the Wii's achilles heel.

I think I already saw that the trailer is a render target.

Anyway what I find more important is that there is more than one good looking game/trailer/render target/whatever is (eg Pangya, Pokemon), that never more had been seen. Along side with incomplet HW and specially with low time to make games for wii (specially given that most of the time will be spent on the control (aparentely that is one of the reasons why so little online for Wii, at this point) and with 8 launch games).

I personally think that even if the console is capable of doing it would be very hard to present the game looking like that (look at 360 launch games), ie it isnt and good way to evaluate the power of Wii.

BTW any modern ATI card (even a 9800) could do things like UE3, which would surpasse this (althought RS trailer is all I want for Wii).

Without sounding too fannish, I don't think Nintendo's bet the farm on a console with an achilles heel... They really don't seem mad enough to do that; Nintendo's a really pragmatic company.

...Even though their pragmatism hasn't always led them to make the right choices always in the past (pissing off 3rd party support with N64 and to a lesser degree, GC). I think they seem to be on the right path now though, and 3rd parties do seem quite enthusiastic for Wii as well so I think it'll be OK.

From watching the streamed video of that IGN guy playing an actual Wii, the pointer seem precise enough methinks, but there might be some lag in the inputs from watching the guy wave the wand and seeing the resulting action on-screen, I dunno. It could be the way the video was put together; I have to try it for myself to make a final judgement. Anyway, even if there is some lag, one has to expect the devs to design around it and make some allowances in their games.

Too much lag (20-30ms?) isn't something you can hide easily I'm afraid. Having said that I don't think Nintendo will release a system with 'broken' controls.

Perhaps not, but the game could allow the player to "pre-compensate" in advance, like in a tennis game you could start swinging a little before you would in reality, so that your on-screen guy still hits the ball.

In a sword fighting game, the opponent could indicate visually what kind of strike would come next, giving the player time to parry even when considering controller lag (sort of the way the old Nintendo game Punch Out game had enemies display their swings first to let the player counter them). Not ideal, I know, but sacrifices always have to be made in consumer tech. :p

Now, I don't know for sure what kind of lag there is - if any - in the wiimote, I'm just speculating here...

20-30 ms might make a difference in high level PvP FPS gameplay, but your brain is used to dealing with a hell of a lot more than that.

It's all a matter of resting you hand while using the Wiimote and also thereby get into the habit of rotating it to change its field of view, instead of moving it more or less perpendicular to the screen.
The rest is up to noise filtering software, like what is used on all touchpads on laptops (try turning off motion filtering on a touchpad). A regular mouse has fixed mechanical motion filtering due to the natural friction of the surface it's moving on.

I thought at one point ubisoft said they had different versions of the game running on cubes and PCs

The lag issue has been clarified by Nintendo in their latest volume of "Iwata aks"

Takeda commented on some problems he had with gaming prior to the Wii Project, particularly doubts about the 60 times per second update that's aimed for by most games. For pointing devices, updating the signal 60 times a second is insufficient, and "the feel of tracking is inadequate," said Takeda. "We were able to read at 200 or 300 times a second using sensor technology, so we decided to give it a try."

Summing up the previous commentary, Iwata noted that rather than the Wii controller coming together exclusively as one idea, it was the amalgamation of numerous ideas, including the rod-shape, the 200 times per second response and the pointer.
