Windows Search 4 without Indexing?

Is there any way to make the new Windows Search 4 work without the indexing service under XP? I don't search that often, so I'm happy to have to go across the whole drive when I want to find something. I'd rather do that than have the Windows Indexing Service chugging away and the extra processes.

Disabling the indexer worked under the old Windows Search (you could still search), but last time I tried this under Search 4, it just couldn't find anything that wasn't in the index.

I have only enabled indexing of my Outlook personal folders. I just use the regular search for anything else and search with the fancy indexed search in Outlook.

Don't you lose the "Search" option in Windows Explorer panes ie it gets taken over by Windows Search 4? It just seems bizarre you can't enable some kind of fallback mode for a disk traversal if you don't want to build, store and maintain a large index.

Seems I don't have Search 4. I have the version that Office 2007 wanted me to install. Is it v3?
