I've actually seen a documentary on that. Don't remember when exactly it started but I do remember it's older than fanboism.

I don't think people appreciate just how trapped kids are nowadays. They've so little room to run wild and express themselves. It's no wonder they/we do stuff like this when we're younger. It's what kids do to stave off boredom.
Life can be phenomenally boring you know. Kids are far more inquisitive and interested in cause + effect than adults in general, and at that difficult age they can wreack substantial havoc. Lack of stimulus isn't their fault, it's ours.
