For me, the expansions of The Witcher 3 are a great example of incredible, unique content. Hearts of Stone is very good.

However, Blood and Wine is like the pinnacle of the human being. The setting, the story is top notch, the characterization, everything. It makes you want to live in those times.

I'd also add Age of Empires 2: The Conquerors.

Other honourable mentions are:

- Diablo 2 patch 1.10, which completely changed the game with Uber Diablo, the famous "Level 85" areas where any item could drop, and many other changes the modified Diablo 2 completely.

- Total Annihilation patch 3.1 by Cavedog. It added new units and stuff to one of the best RTS games ever made.

This majestic classic changed gaming forever -

Blood and Wine is better than the main game. That's the best one.

I enjoyed The Legend of Dead Kel for Kingdoms of Amalur, which also tells an interesting story with well written characters.

Hivebusters for Gears 5 was very well designed. Highly optimized Gears-style combat scenarios.

Eagle Watch for the original Rainbow Six was an excellent expansion. The five included missions were better than most of the missions in the main game.

yeah, Toussalnt is like a totally different place. Unlike ANY other region in The Witcher 3; the people in Toussaint treats you with respect and seems more educated, the place is colourful and clean compared to the grittier, darker and dirtier places in the main game.

As for Kingdoms of Amalur, I really wanted that game back in the day, really really wanted it. Can't remember why. If I recall it correctly I wanted it 'cos it was some kind of Diablo clone? Gotta check the info about the game. But it was because the game was made by developers I admired at the time. I never got the game in the end....

As for Gears 5, I didn't complete it yet, but I loved Gears Tactics for sure.

Amalur wasn't really a Diablo clone. It was supposed to launch a new MMORPG franchise and from what I remember it was basically a SP MMORPG with action combat, latter of which was pretty novel at the time. The action combat actually was really good but the rest of the game I think was pretty WoW clone esque as was pretty common then.

Lord of Destruction was a huge expansion as well. It added more classes, and extra act, and probably most importantly, the ability to play at resolutions higher than 640*480.

Streets of Rage 4 Mr X's Nightmare was also pretty big. It added 3 extra characters and a survival mode, and the survival mode had unlockable move sets for every character, even the non-dlc ones, that can be used in the main game.

I'm not good with DLC. I always have the sneaking suspicion that some publishers want to instill a feeling that you're not getting the complete game unless you get the DLC. Things that should have been here from the beginning being ransomed. Which isn't helped by the fact that DLC cover the gamut from horse armor to entire levels that flesh out parts of the story like a directors cut.

Expansions however, those I agree with. Morrowind hade several that I loved for what they brought to the table. In fact I'm a bit sad that expansions aren't more common. If I like a game, why not use the ready made game assets to make a little more of it for those that want to keep visiting this world that's been created? It's an ROI question of course. But I do like me a good expansion.

For me it is "Blood and Wine" for "the Withcer 3" and "Phantom Liberty" for "CyperPunk 2077"

Both the DLC's I mentioned are DLC's not linked to the main gameplay, so I would say your are wrong.

Doom II and Stalker Call of Pripyat. Ok I guess officially these were standalone games. But come on.

Gothic II: Night of the Raven

Easily.

In 2003 DLC or expansion packs were called add-ons. NotR expanded the base game in a smart and believable way. I remember myself thinking "Now THIS is how you do a proper add-on!".

These days Gothic II + NotR is called Gothic II Gold Edition.

While I won't pretend to know for certain whatever category any and all game content falls under (I don't think there is much of an industry standard here) I've only ever seen these described as expansions. Never as DLC. They are by definition downloadable content though, but I'd say it's a misnomer considering how big they are.
