What do you think PS3/Xbox2 games will look like?

Or games in 3 years for that matter. It think we are heading into the whole CG look, as DOOM3 already is going into.

They may even look very similar to Final Fantasy the movie.

Do you mean like this?

I doubt the leap will be as big as last gen. We will see more details and a huge push for aniso and fsaa

Only that? You're not very optimistic about the future of hardware are you?

I think its quite the opposite, FINALLY good lighting and shadow, finally good looking shades that doesnt look like plastic models, incredibly detailed models, with realistic looking hair, clothes and animation.

Well, if hardware lives up to my expectations :D

Especially the lighting and shadow effects, its a critical part to make a scene look as credible and immersive as you want, no matter how many polygons your characters have, if a scene has bad lighting, its useless.

I think the leap will be huge. Not only do you have companies like ATI and nVidia releasing GPU's every gen at moores law cubed. You have Sony and Microsoft fighting a huge war over control of the living room. This raises the stakes in terms of a platforms baseline performance. By having Microsoft in the marketplace, Sony and Nintendo become more aggressive with hardware.

I personally think that Sony (and also nintendo to a certain extent) have always been very aggressive with their hardware.......

I mean look at PS1... it was a very advanced piece of hardware compared to the competition when it came to 3D graphics... and Sony pushed it QUITE aggressively... They wanted pretty much EVERY game to be 3D (it was *fashionable*)...

and just have a look at PS2... how could u not call such a *weird* (to put it simply) architecture aggressive.... it had to be aggressive too be able to hold its own with newer consoles.... again, thats arguable but at the end of the day i really think, at this point, that Sony will reign supreme even in the next generation because of their *aggression* in the past and still now........ don't take this as a phanboi comment, i'm just talking business here........

dont just  me..... if u have something to say then put it in words...

all i'm saying is: look at what pure hype did for PS2 at launch and until good games started coming out.... now take that and multiply for god knows how much for PS3.... its pretty clear that unless Sony seriously fucks something up along the way, they will stay on top....

it was not a *whoooohoo sony ownz all*... it was just a thought...

There's almost no way graphics in next gen games will look like that IMO. That's jumping frmo making game models that are 1000 times more simple to making final fantasy the movie in real time.

It's too much work for game aritsts to be able to compete with anything like that. It would also mean that small development teams would no longer exsist.

Yeah but the day graphics will become like that, will u be complaining about how small development teams can't do that or will u enjoy the awesome graphics??? one day small dev teams will no longer exist simply because of the advance in technology....... there's not much u can do about it...

that's just the thing, if development teams small or large, don't have enough people, or enough time/money to really make a title look the way they want or like that pic shows (which happens about 95% of the time), you actually WON'T get graphics like that.

The day small dev teams don't exsists, is the day the industry stops growing and starts shrinking. You'd get less games I personally don't want to see that...

I don't really think you understand how much time/work it takes to create a scene as realistic as that. Do you?

well realistically no i dont but i assume it takes *quite a while*.... let alone thats not even realtime... we're not discussing that......

what i really think is that as graphics advances so will dev tools to make things look prettier easily.. but thats just me u never know

ok, fair enough. However, what I'm thinking is that you'll be able to do lot's of interesting things in realtime, but we still won't achieve what that image shows. Things will be easier, but as always not easy enough.

i guess the balance between *good looking games* and ease of development will pretty much be the same... with next-gen-MGS2's being few amongst a sea of army men kind of titles........ all in a next gen kind of way, which will always look 10x better than today's games.......

Baulders Gate was craftet by quite a small developer group... it's quite amazing what they did on PS2 hardware and how it compared (and still does) against games from larger developers. I think Outcast 2 devs were quite small too... too bad Outcast 2 was canned. :(

Well, if we assume PS3 (or any console equivilant at the time) is abouts 1000x more powerful than current consoles - what would that give us? Would it match the above screen shot?

Also, keep in mind that over time new methods will be found to make games look even more impressive. Last gen there was the jump to 3d, this time around we have 3d + amazing weather like effects (look at MGS2). Perhaps next gen will have superb image quality and lightning wich will look impressive in its own way. It may not have the detail of the grass in the above shot, but it doesn't have to be less impressive IMO.

- just some thoughts...

Why even bother speculating? The Shenmue Head Demo will still be the pinacle of interactive entertainment technology!

On the other hand, the games with the best graphics may not have the best gameplay.

Right now, with a new Radeon9700 and UT2k3 on my PC, and MechAssault, Panzer Dragoon Orta, and Splinter Cell on my Xbox, the two games I play the most are Avernum, a PC game made by a tiny company with graphics that could've been from 1997, and Starcraft, which is actually from 1997.

Avernum -> http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/

Oh the irony.
