Value of Linus Media Group benchmarking and reviews

I tend to agree that Steve's tone has veered too far into the realm of preachy, snarky, holier than thou, and condescending. I don't have any issue with his consumer advocacy, but, frankly, that combination with hardware and PC reviewer takes a lot of the fun out of the hobby. I applaud his decision to split their consumer efforts into a separate channel. Make GN fun again!

Alright, I'm gonna bump this given the newest beef between GN and LTT. How have our collective opinions changed since this topic started two years ago?

I enjoy both channels, howevery I don't see LTT as a technical review powerhouse nor do I see GN as the generator of malarkey and social commentary that LTT tends to provide (and I mean that in a lighthearted positive way.) I'm also aware of that girl Madison and her seemingly serious concerns around LTT staff behavior years ago, however I don't know if any of that is still in play today.
watch both two! I don't take LTT too seriously nor I watch much content there.... Their style of humour is more or less the same as always..., putting some random guy from the stuff performing odd gestures to indicate something they consider relevant.

But they don't need to be too serious and scientific anymore. We have DF, Hub, GN and a few others. Big companies gravitate towards those for that kind of stuff. I still think LTT is a good channel to learn how to build a PC or just watch some gadget they show for the first time, or anything between typical LTT and a bit technical, like when they show how Intel GPUs work with modern games.

They've been humbled, which I love, they are more down to earth now, and they don't behave like prima donnas like before. In that sense, I'm grateful to Steve, but he knows he is "better" than them, he should move on --but still be vigilant with malicious companies.

Lots of lessons learned for future youtubers there, after the fall of LTT.

Steve's "holier than thou" attitude is getting annoying. Who gives a shit if Linus didn't make a big fuss about it when they found out and doesn't want to join any legal battles.. Linus is right, in the end it was them getting screwed over moreso than the customer who was still getting at least some deal from it.. They cancelled their partnership with Honey and moved on. He's got a company that's on a complete other level than GamersNexus and other shit to worry about. He'll pick his battles much more cautiously than GamersNexus..

"Cautiously" with LTT often means "nonexistent". He simply doesn't do what GN does, it's primarily a marketing channel for PC products - like a lot of DIY channels. Linus isn't being 'cautious' because he's such a stickler for facts, he doesn't address this stuff because his channel is a content mill.

I agree Steve's 'expose' style videos can be a little grating with the Inside Edition style editing, but there's really no other channel doing this level of investigation for the actual companies - LTT sure as fuck 'aint it doing it (and if we're going to talk about grating, I honestly can't fathom how anyone can stand LTT's videos).

The fact that this is considered by some to be "throwing Linus under the bus", like all these channels should be in lockstep and not critique each other when they do a shitty job is ridiculous. The last problem the PC youtuber sphere has is too much actual investigative, longform journalism ffs!

If his consumers were hurt by it, then I'm sure Linus would have taken action.

Lol, come on man. Perhaps he would have...by ripping off Gamers Nexus's coverage without attribution.

In that sense, I'm grateful to Steve, but he knows he is "better" than them, he should move on.

Prob should check out the start of his most recent video then.

Is GN going after LTT for the Honey sponsorships?

If GN is splitting off the consumer advocacy stuff into a different channel I think that's the best move. I want to see them cover PC hardware first and foremost. I like the consumer advocacy and exposing of shithead business practices but that's kind of a different thing, and there should be plenty of content on that subject for a dedicated channel

As I write this I'm realizing that I haven't watched many GN videos lately because there have been a bunch of exposées on companies that I don't care about. I skipped those so GN probably got bumped from my algorithm.

Well yea, obviously they're different. That's a good thing. The point is I don't need a sermon every investigation he conducts about the ethics of journalism and the moral compass and integrity of other outlets or people who chooses not to make their content about that, or which fail to meet his standards. Talk about the issue, the company, what they were doing, and what he plans on doing about it. Continually calling out others just makes him look petty IMO.

And yes, I stand by my comment that I'm sure Linus would have come forward and pushed hard on Honey had their community been harmed in a material way.

If one of the primary ways they differentiate is integrity, no - it's not a good thing.

Those are related.

Don't go Steve'ing out on me Flappy.

It's petty when it's unwarranted and constant. 🤷‍♂️

It's warranted, hence the long expose GN did of LTT ages ago. GN actually puts in the work to protect consumers, up to and including filing class action lawsuits:

(Steve mentioned Linus for about 2 minutes out of that 84 minute video (at the 16 min mark), which prompted all this btw. As Steve explains, they included that clip from LTT because it conflicts with the entire purpose of this video! Linus weighed in - stupidly - on this topic, it's completely fair for them to respond)

Regardless, Steve isn't going to make a response to Linus basically devoting an entire WAN show episode in response (speaking of drama!), he's sticking to written replies, and has offered to meet then privately at Computex to discuss further. The channel is splitting off the investigate work into another channel, so if you crave Steve droning on for 20 minutes as 50 bar charts fill the screen, you get your content unadulterated.

Yeah, he's splitting it off to another channel for a reason... people are tired of hearing him continually looking for and bringing up drama. This thing happened 3 years ago. Why is Steve in all his investigative glory talking about it now only after another guy made a video about it, who by the way, was able to speak about various affected creators, including Linus, and the situation throughout the video without some attitude of moral superiority?

I can understand why Linus would want to clear the air and say his piece.
