Upgradeable PS3 hard drive and console warranties

PS2 can use a standard PC hard drive, infact I have one in mine now via HDLoader. But the ps3 will use laptop 2.5inch hard drives, and you can upgrade those ofcourse.
How do you do that? You need the HDLoader disk and a PC HDD only? Can I also use a USB HDD?

I think sony needs to be very careful they don’t get caught between two chairs. IMO they don’t have any chance in taking on the pc market - the functionality, mass of games, and standardization that pcs offer is simply something that sony cannot compete with. The ps3 price is essentially a pc price and the only advantages it offers are blu-ray functionality (for now) and specific game exclusives (and the pc will naturally have its share of pc only games). At the same time, the xbox and wii are offering more console oriented prices with consoles that are more game specific. Sony will undoubtedly fair well given their position, but I think the pc type approach is dangerous. They can easily end up alienating many of their console gamers whilst appealing to only a few pc-style enthusiasts.

They arent trying to replace PC's mind. They are trying to offer a prroduct that can be used comfortably for entertainment uses and thats it

You need a network adaptor and a standard IDE PC hard drive. (although there are some that are incompatible due to the weird casing some drives have)

This should help..

I backup all my games on the hard drive(no more worrying about scratching my disc), and the load times are reduced dramatically.

I'm not sure about USB drives, but there might be some ps2 exploit like USB-HDLoader but im honestly not sure. google should help though

Although internet browsing has clawed back in favour for the PC in recent years - but again, that's why Sony's putting a browser there now, which is truly SUCH an enabler in terms of computing generally, and likely going forward as more and more gets put on the net versus local applications.
There is a trend toward stuffing a browser into every console, but I'll be honest and say I just don't get it. Unless you have a 1080 resolution TV, it's not that enjoyable. Opera is pretty good about form fitting the content, even at 1280 by 720, but the rule was that the more interactive the website was, the less enjoyable it is to use through a TV.

It's not out of the question that web browsing on a console (or portable) will take off, but it seems more likely that it will remain a niche benefit, something that people will try once or twice, then never again.

I agree it depends on your setup - whether you have a HDTV or not - and the effectiveness of the browser. However! Though I personally would probably find my PC more suitable and friendly for browsing, I can easily see myself using the PS3's for "browsing on the side" so to speak, while gaming, instead of getting up off the coach if I just want to check up on here or another message board or whatever. So it could steal some of my (more casual) browsing attention from the PC while I am gaming, merely because of convenience.

My broader point, though, is just how inclusion of something like that might signal how Sony views PS3 as a 'computer' in the home versus PS3 with Linux. They know most people aren't going to use Linux, that's not where their strategy to shift attention from PCs lies.

I'm sure Sony wants to lure ppl away from their pcs for the reason that they want to provide their content (music, movies, tv) exclusively to the ps3 owners. In the www they have to compete with a large number of content providers such as Apple, but on the ps3 they'll reach around 100 million consumers (assuming it sells so much...and it will probably) exclusively.
The synergistic effects are endless. through the ps3 they can promote their content, but also their gadgets: mp3 players, cellphones, pmps, psp (all of them will interact with the ps3 and sonys marketing will insist that sony works best with sony..) + ppl will buy HDTVs. If the ps3 turns out to be a success I envy the sony shareholders

i believe ps3 web browsing could be huge, (in the past web on tv hasnt worked since viewing on standard tv resolutions is crap)
i see 2 main users
A/ ppl with computers, who quickly wanna see the web news/ or check their email etc between ad breaks.
B/ ppl without computers for whatever reason, poor, technophobe. who wanna see see what the web is about. hmmm visions of some guys viewing porn from the comfort of their couchs
