The same issue that affected the forums happened again very early this morning. This time I believe it was triggered by the backup system running, although the times could just be coincidental.
@BRiT made me aware at 0239, and I spotted that message, plus a missing backup report email, when I woke up at 0845. I'd fixed it by 0851. Total downtime was around 7 hours (which is around 28 @hoom hours if you operate on his calendar).
I've got a few things to do today that take priority, but if I've got time near the end of the day then I'll spend sometime again trying to root cause it. I know what the symptom is (phys mem exhaustion, followed by swap), but not the root.
