Same issue — phys mem and then swap exhaustion — still no closer to finding the root cause, or mitigating it. Not sure how long things were down for, but certainly no longer than 6 hours (the backup system ran to completion, finishing at 0227 my time, and I'd brought it back at 0820 my time).
I might give the VM some more memory just to see if that staves the issue off to reduce periods of downtime, but I'm loathe to do that because my instinct says it won't actually do much. Still, there's plenty of RAM left on the host so why not. Will try and work it on it later.
