Though Wiimote is intended to be used differently, so is designed around different ergonomic. Trying to point accurately at the screen with a DS2 shaped Wiimote would be a lot harder. Comparing Wiimote to DS3 seems to me kinda like comparing a claw hammer with a rubber mallet : both serve the same general purpose in hitting things, but the designs and implementations are specific to execute different roles. Just because you love the Claw Hammer when nailing wood together, doesn't make it the ideal choice for panel beating, and you don't want to try nailing planks with a rubber mallet either.
