This is the first in a series that will cover all the consoles

Gamers will eternally argue about these things. For instance, why are RPGS so different on the PCs than on the consoles? Which developers make better RPGs, Westerners or the Japanese? Getting deeper into the trenches, there are even more questions left unanswered. Are the games in The Legend of Zelda series actually role-playing games? Has the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance series besmirched the brilliant and more traditional D&D PC-based version of Baldur's Gate? Is Final Fantasy really an RPG, or is it really an interactive anime?

What about RPG evolution? What kinds of change will we see in the future? The seeds planted by games such as Knights of the Old Republic, Fable, and Jade Empire are all going to reach fruition in the next generation on Xbox 360. Put simplistically, players like to shift from good to evil and back again. Many RPG gameheads like deciding their fate in games; they enjoy affecting the outcome of the story. RPGs in the future are very likely going to deliver morality shifts of the sort seen in KOTOR, Jade Empire, and Fable. And after having experienced the physical extremities of good and bad shown in Fable, including visual aging, it's going to be difficult for developers to ignore their impact going forward.

I thought it was a pretty good read and can't wait till i read the other ones

It was an ok read but it didn't tell me anything I didn't know (rabid rpg fan)

Visual aging is a cool feature to tie into rpgs, but I have my doubts of it being a must have of future rpgs. I really want to see more opened ended rpgs. An open ended rpg is more immersive to me than the more linear rpgs I'd rather blaze my own trial than follow one already paved.

Remember this is part one . they are doing one for each of the 3 consoles plus the pc

Anyway still the best or I should say most imresive (sp?) rpg was ultima 8 . It was like a real world where everyone had thier own things .

It was very diffrent

There's definitely been a lack of open ended games on both the PC and consoles (more so on consoles obviously, but it isn't exactly like there's been much to cheer about on the PC either). But hopefully more JRPGs will start to apply multiple endings like in SMT, which at least is a start towards a less on-rails approach, albeit a small one.

But honestly, with the exception of Planescape: Torment, I've always thought that the story in the more open ended PC RPGs have been garbage. I'm kinda hoping that we'll start to see more games which are somewhere in the middle, sort of like KOTOR, which isn't exactly linear but not really open ended either.
