Sony Computer Entertainment has just signed an agreement of partnership with the International Federation of Football (FIFA) over the period 2007-2014 for an amount from 305 million dollars (either 237 million euros). Sony Computer Entertainment will profit thus from the rights for the World cups 2010, in 2014 and South Africa, in South America. This agreement was officialized a few days ago at the time of a ceremony in Tokyo.
Does this mean only Sony has the rights to use real teams in next gen football games? What about EA's FIFA??? Konami's PES???

Yea, it seems to be just a sponsorship deal. Don't know if it'll affect much to games.

Reuters
Sony Corporation has signed a 305 million dollar deal to become a sponsor of soccer's world governing body FIFA from 2007 to 2014.

The deal is the first global sponsorship agreement entered into by the Tokyo-based electronics, entertainment and technology group and they will join Adidas and Hyundai and three as yet unnamed companies as "FIFA partners".

One partner is chosen for a defined industry or business category and Sony will have some exclusive rights over "Digital Life", which covers entertainment to electronics, Sony Corporation said in a statement.

Under the terms of the deal, Sony will have "core sponsorship rights" to all FIFA competitions over the seven years, most notably the World Cups of 2010, which will take place in South Africa, and 2014.

"I am delighted and very proud that Sony has chosen FIFA and football for this momentous deal which creates a true partnership with many opportunities for taking the relationship far beyond a classical sponsorship," FIFA president Sepp Blatter said in a FIFA statement released on Wednesday.

Sony chairman Nobuyuki Idei said: "FIFA has a spectacular reach around the world through the universal language of football and it is this unique attribute that convinced us to commit to this global sponsorship deal.

"This is an ideal opportunity for us to leverage the powerful assets of the Sony Group."

Well, if it wasn't an exclusive right, i'd say 305 Million Dollars is a bit much...

Oh sorry, missed that. Does that mean that Sony paid 305M now but will profit from advertisment in the next few years? Who paid who?

I assume this just means we're gonna see PS3 adverts, banners, more banners, more billboards all over the world cup and any major FIFA event then... What's new...?

At least Sony Computer Entertainment has nothing to do with this

It'll just be PS3(4) adverts before FIFA games, in FIFA games, and everywhere they can associate with it.

No, look at the Reuters article instead, jeux-france just mistranslated it or something like that.

Okay, the first articles wrong. Looks like it'll be adverts for Sony TVs instead of PS3 then ;)

If the deal is with Sony Corporation, that includes Sony electronics (TV, HI-FI, DVD player/recorders, MP3 Players etc), Vaios, Playstation business... Everything.

As if they needed any more coverage  :D

Hmm! Could they force EA to put in Sony banners in the dies of the stadiums in the FIFA games? That would be interesting.

Well, this is a nice move by Sony, even if it´s just advertizing. The World Cup is by far the most important sports event around (and thank God for that, since it features the greatest sport ever :D ).

I still hope Konami will be able to get as many licensed teams as possible for WE, I´m praying someday I´ll be able to play as my team, Cruz Azul (mexican league, one of the best soccer leagues in the american continent ). 8)
