yet again, nintendo have decided to not release something in europe,, again after promising it definately would be.. Not only that , but recently ( to take the pi55 out of loyal supporters) , they've even sent legal letters to UK indie game shops who've been selling imported games... What REALLY annoys is that i knew someone who had 'animal crossing' on her US gamecube and i've been aching to play this . . .

there has to be just one solution to this stupidity,, sony are running nintendo europe..

just import it yourself from the US..

i guess that w/o software to use it the e-card reader would not have been of much use..

Are you sure it's NoE decision and not NoJ ?

Anyway... what is the e-Card Reader to begin with ?

Just integrate localization into the software development, instead to annoy fans (the hand that feeds you) with forced split markets and insane release date differences (examples: WRC2 US, ZOE2 PAL, SC US/PAL, Animal Crossing PAL).

Global release of games, no need for game imports.
Global release of hardware, no need for hardware imports.
Global release of hardware with same features (example: no pro-scan for PAL GC/X-Box), no need for hardware imports.

No need for imports, no need for wasting time on chasing importers.

Europe doesn't get the E-Reader because one of it's biggest uses (currently) is connectivity with Animal Crossing.. a game that didn't get released in PAL territories.. for whatever reason. Probably due to conflicting languages/holidays/etc.

I agree totally with this. I hate waiting months and months after the Japanese release of a game for the North American version. I can't imagine how bad it must be in PAL territories :(

How hard would it be to do this?

Well the 'buying seasons' are a little different in JP and the West. From what I understand, the Japanese school year ends in March, which is why most major games and consoles launch then (ie: FF X).. then there's the 6-8 month window to translate them into english (which can be substantial, again like FF:X) for the X-mas season here. As for PAL.. well, don't most games need a code rewrite to support the different resolution and scanrate? Not to mention the dubbing/UI rewrite for French/German/Dutch/Swedish/Finnish/Italian/Spanish/however many other languages are supported.

Anyhow, simultaneous major software/console launches in atleast JP and NA don't really make sense, as I've described above. I do, however, feel sorry for the Europeans. I'm sure it would be better for the EU gaming market in general to get the major releases out for x-mas, but it seems most of the time that's just impossible.

(sitting on finished games like SC II for 5-6 months just sucks ass btw)

i assume the "excuse" will be about pal or languages . but the reason this annoyed me most was that there IS a Pal version done for Australia (e-reader and animal crossing)

And frankly , i've done language translations , and yes it can be tedious , but it really isnt that difficult . as for pal<>ntsc , it doesnt have to take ages at all, and with a low technical level game like animal crossing , i don't see it being any form of a problem.

err and as for sony , what i meant was that sony must have a 'spy' who is destroying NoE from within ;)

YEAH the situation in europe can be very frustrating. i just hope they'll sort it out by the next generation...
the most frustrating part is that UK gamers take it up the a$$ because there is not need for translation and all that.... i mean, i understand translation can be tedious for french, german, spaniush and italian territories, but us????? we speak english!!

With the lineup nintendo is giving you this holiday for europe, you dont have much to whine about, its nearly identical to USA.

And about E-reader

Speaking to us this evening, Nintendo Europe has sought to clarify the reports stemming form a UK news source that the acclaimed e-Reader GBA add-on had been canned for the territory.

“The launch of the E-Card Reader in Europe has been moved into the first half of 2004, as Nintendo ‘s focus for the remainder of 2003 is the strong software release schedule for both the Nintendo GameCube and the Game Boy Advance,â€￾ said a spokesperson this evening scuppering supposedly concrete proof that the device had been binned.

Nintendo insiders have today spoken of the fact that the news breaking earlier this weel regarding the e-Reader slippage was entirely wrong. “This whole this was purely reactionary and quite ridiculous. The e-Reader was never scrapped for Europe and the fact that it was reported otherwise is shocking. This is just a slippage, as happens all the time. To tout it as a snubbing to Europeans was a shamelessly cynical thing to do.â€￾

So there you have it. e-Reader justice for all. Now, if we keep up that Animal Crossing campaign… And if that works, we’ll eat two hats. Big ones two. Like cowboy hats, or those big ones sported by drunken women at Ascot.

cyborg,

when i bought my cube ( about january i think )

animal crossing was "spring 2003" . the us version had been released since what , nov 2002 ?

and looking at ,

http://www.nintendo-europe.com/NOE/en/GB/games/coming_soon.jsp

just confuses matters because it isnt as up to date as the press-release :-/

To be honest , a lot of the annoyance on sites like gamesindustry is because the retailers are getting fed up with NOE clamping down on imports but at the same time having product which they sit on .

-dave-

still i'll be amazed if none of that product slips . . though it is nice to see 'wierd' stuff like harvest moon in the list :)
