Not really "new". It's just a Bose-Einstein condensate that uses atoms which have "fermionic" half-integer spin vs "boson" integer spin. The problem is, fermions obey the Pauli exclusion principle, so it's hard to "condense" them. However, two fermions with half-integer spins can "pair up" (Cooper pair theory of superconductors) to act like a boson with integer spin. This is supposed to work with electrons in super conductors. It has never been observed with whole atoms.
The relation with superconductivity is that if we can create macroscopic cooper pairs in a gas, then we can study their formation and properties easier than we can study electron cooper pairs in superconducting materials.
