Rumor: 40% of new 40GB PS3s defective says Belgian Retailer "disc reading error"

An official response from SCEE:

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) can categorically deny that there is a 40% failure rate on the newly release 40GB PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) as has been reported on a Dutch website. Having launched in October, the 40GB PS3 has encountered the same industry leading, very low failure rates, comparable to the low level failure rates of the 60GB PS3.

“We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PLAYSTATION 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story,” said David Reeves, President, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. “Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.”

Ouch. Someone's off Sony's xmas card list.

40%?! That'd be a huge number, that you'd think QA would pick up on.

Without knowing the actual numbers it's hard to say something qualitative. It could just be 2 consoles out of 5.

I'd say that it would be very unlike Sony to sell something with a almost instant failure rate of 40%.

Cheers

They probably dropped all their boxes and broke them at the shop

Given that we know the PS3 is very well designed and virtually bulletproof (and the fact that the 40gb has been out for a few weeks and this is the first anyone has heard of it), it's the only real explanation I can think of.

Some french retailers indicate that they got some "disc read error" for last PS3 starter pack (F1 and HS), but difficult to have a % number of fail rate…
No info for the moment for 40Go PS3…
May be it's a batch of Blu-ray, or other anectotic problems (like a not plug cable, new supplier with less control, delivery service, M$ commando strike and Wii-mote splash ;)).
We have to wait for more info (if we got them…).

More likely some twit dropped a pallet off a forklift and borked the drive alignment of that batch...

Heh.

Also though, the 60GB versions have been flying out of the shops, so if there is a problem with the earliest batch, it could be that these problems are discovered a little late because the 60GB versions were sold first ... (they were better value after all). I've been following a few different sites with people searching for a 60GB version and mentioning that in their area they were all gone pretty quickly.

If you want 60 go packs there are a lot in my area, so we can make a deal? ;)
And for Wii it's the same… and naturaly we have all the 360's packs available!

Heh, I can let some people know if they're still looking for one. But personally, I bought the 60GB version on day one, so I'm fine thanks. ;) Actually I would like to have a 40GB version next, so I can use the 60GB version to play around with Linux or when the living room is not available (or practical) and the 40GB version for my study. I loved having two PS2s for the same reason, and I'm definitely planning on doing the same with the PS3. My work LCD is HDCP compliant and works well enough with the PS3 already.
