Rip models & maps from any 3D game

3D Ripper DX allows you to rip models & whatnot from DirectX 9.0 applications (emulators included). Have yet to test it out myself, but apparently you'll need a really beefy pc.

Leon from RE4 - http://emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=34466&stc=1&thumb=1&d=1163108371
Link from twilight princes + some meshsmoothing http://emutalk.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=35169&d=1169301306

So, it can extract models from any PC game or emulator... Holy crap, this could be used for major hijacking of model resources from warious games...

One 'good' example: now is possible to rip models from PC MGS2, and make good HL2 mod based on it. :)
One 'bad' example: ripped models & art can be used in million ilegal ways. Perferct modeled Lara Croft model can be very usefull to some people :)

Both good and bad examples are perfectly illegal.

You can reverse engineering data for your educative/informative purpose, here in France, which precludes you from using the said data in a released product, free mod or anything else.
Also, to take a second example, reverse engineering is illegal in numerous cases (if not all the time) in the US.

Anyway, that was just the "legal" part of the topic. Now, about the technical side of it, this D3D ripper reminds me of another model extrator, for OGL, OGLE.

These tools can be interesting, on the technical level, for those who are planning on doing an intricate study work of a particular game and it engine; you could get a better idea of the model complexity of each and every models without having to have recourse to writting a game specific model extrator and converter.

Do they just rip the meshes, are can they rip animation data (skeletons) too? For trainee developers, it'd be good to rip models and use them in one's own experimenting. Saves on having to find artists willing to volunteer stuff!

im sure u can get animations as well, glintercept works similar i assume
all your draw calls etc are first caught by the app (which can save the data eg textures, verts, shaders) before being submitted to the nvidia/ati driver

Or you can just get the HL2 leak to have access to source files, editors and such... I'm sure many studios have done it...

Sounds interresting but I dont really see the point. If you want to play around with a engine and can only program just download free models or use the models in the game. If you want to build a mod just model things yourself or find a artist to model them. You'll need a artist anyway if you want to build a decent mod. Atleast I couldnt live with just ripping a bunch of models I rather spend time trying to become a better modeller even though I'm not one of the most gifted modellers out there ;)

Could be usefull for people who want to make cool wallpapers though.

3D Printscreen

Some quotes from the web site.

All on screen visible 3D shapes and textures can be saved.

3D PrintScreen brings you for the first time and in one unique tool the ability to save 3D scenes from both OpenGL and DirectX applications.

Saved geometry is fully described in XML. Thus it can be easily read or written in your standard XML editor.

and it's free.

I will say it doesn't work very well I'm afraid from my experimentation nor has any other 3d scene grabber. The only one I've seen that works well is PIX which is a DirectX debugging tool and no way to get the information out really and the file format isn't documented. Also PIX is slow as hell for any complex scene plus requires for recording time based data to start from program execution and the file size gets large quite quick.
