Republicans for Kerry?

I recommend to start with Reason magazine to get a flavor. It's more balanced between social and economic liberty. CATO is a thinktank for libertarian economics. Superficially, it will resemble republicanism, but that's because the Republican party for years has been taking CATO's publishes papers and using them to back their own policies.

Given that the majority of people in the US fit the label "Fiscally conservative and socially liberal" :

- Question : Why are social issues (and the individual opinions of each presidential candidate) given prominent posistion in pre-election media coverage and related debates?

It's just that here in the UK by far the majority (of people) fit the label ("Fiscally conservative and socially liberal") yet 'social issues and their releated debates' are much less important (in pre-election dibates) as the main topics are always 'Education, Heathcare and Taxation' (reforms and funding).

Because there's more to decision making than sheer numbers. It could be that a minority position is a "deal-breaker" for them one way or another while the vast majority doesn't care as much about that position. In that choice the rational politician, seeking to maximize his probability of success, follows the will of the minority.

And I don't think your description is really true. Most US and UK (or BRD or RF) citizens seem to be quite happy with their mega-states.
