R6XX for Xbox2 (questions for Dave Baumann)?

Someone posting in the teamxbox forum, in response to Dave Baumann's post here in the Beyond3D forum about Xbox2 gpu being developed on the east coast, claimed:

there are 2 teams on the east coast though. eastcoast 1 is r4, artx is r5(n5), east coast2 is r6(X), ati just like nvidia always work with 3 products in the pipeline. there is no way m$ would put an 18 month old chip into the x2.

Will Xbox2 have an R6XX gpu? Or will it have a fast R4X0 gpu?

A R6XX makes more sense if the VPU is going to be .65 nm. The R5XX is supposed to be .90 nm and the rumors have been .65 nm VPU for Xbox 2.

R-5X as MS will need to have the final GPU ready before the end of this year if they want to launch in Fall 2005. R 6X won't be ready in time for launch next year.

GPU development cycles are getting bigger, not smaller, so a R7XX in 2007 or late 2006 wouldn't seem that unreasonable. Just like I wouldn't expect another direct-X version until XBox 2 lauches.

Besides, the biggest different between R7XX and R6XX IMO is going to be the speed of the chip and not the feature set, and MS would have to weigh the risk of it being late, along with it's feature set/performance, and I just couldn't see MS holding off for more GPU speed.

I highly doubt a 2005 launch, but thats just me.

Idem

Well don't highly doubt it, because that's exactly what's going to happen. Fall 2005. All those sports games MS canned are all getting moved to XBox 2 and that time frame.

if Xbox2 is coming in late 2005, like others have said, I don't think MS would put in any R4xx based VPU. it's either going to be R5xx or R6xx.

something between R500 and R550 or between R550 and R600.

Agreed, especially if R420 does not include support for PS/VS 3.0. I doubt very seriously that Microsoft would just stick with PS/VS 2.0. There's been a lot conjecture that Xbox Next will support DirectX Next. So that at least means PS/VS 3.0 support.

bbot, can you post a link to that comment on teamxbox forum?

i couldn't find it by searching for R6XX or R600.

right on. I agree.

ATI did say last year that both Microsoft's and Nintendo's next consoles would have DX9 level shaders. now while that could mean VS/PS 2.0, I kinda think it means VS/PS 3.0, at least.

quote from Deano Calver:

ATI gave some infomation on video cards market pentration data, and had a quick gloat about being in both Microsoft's and Nintendo's next gen console, no real info on them (obviously) except for one tiny snippet, that we should expect at least Dx9 level shaders on both. Wether or not its the same basic core being used in both they didn't say.

maybe Xbox2 will have some extended version of VS/PS 3.0 like Xbox had extended custom version of DX8 & VS/PS 1.1 (i think), or even VS/PS 4.0 - and I think maybe N5 will have OpenGL 2.0 shaders.

ATI didn't say specifically. which leaves alot of room.

and trow in the rumour of Nintendo licensing xbox2 hardware and bringing it out under their own name and you got a nice coctail here :)

The hopes for a card between R6xx and R7xx are fanboyish nonsense, IMO. Unless you´re expecting it in 2007, of course.

If Xbox2 launches in 2005, I´d say it will have a card between R4xx and R5xx. If it´s 2006, then I´m expecting something between R5xx and R6xx. Remember how GF4 was launched shortly after Xbox was launched? The exact same thing will happen here.

Those games don't sell well at all. They're probably just loosing money on them. It makes sense that they would want to have a strong 1st and/or 2nd party sports lineup when Xbox 2 system launches. I just don't see the cancelation as an indication of a 2005 launch.

Microsoft needs to shake things up and rethink its sports strategy for the next generation. NFL fever has to be a Madden killer or at least a serious threat to the Madden franchise.

it depends on when MS launches Xbox2. they might decide 2005 is too early.

but anyway, a 2005 launch would mean a custom R500. or something between R500 and R550.

a 2006 launch means a custom R550, or something between R550 and R600.

I agree that R7xx is not realistic.

I believe it will be inbetween a r500 and a r600.

Alot of tech from an r600 but not all of it.

ALso it being clocked faster than an r500 but not very close to the r600 in speed.

I don't believe the micron process matters . If the chip is big and hot ms only has to worry about that untill they can move it to the next micron processes.
