LONG LIVE PSX! :D

Worldwide PSX sales are close to 100 million mark....btw which is the most sold condole in history....?

Most sold console in history, thats probably PSX. The only thing close to that in videogame history would be GameBoy.

GameBoy, GameBoy Pocket, GameBoy Color combined had reached 100 million units. Add GBA/GBA SP sales on top of that and you have the GameBoy kicking much booty. Poor Gunpei Yokoi, if it wasn't for that damn VirtualBoy

SNES managed 46 million units worldwide but PSX is the king. Its gonna take a hell of alot to kill the PlayStation name. Can you imagine a PSTwo at $50, with access to PSOne/Two library of games. Thats gonna sell like crazy for years to come.

PStwo sounds/looks horribly retarded. Sony should take a page from Sega/Team Andromeda's naming conventions and call it the PSZwei.

Has a nice ring to it :D

We have a bright one among us! ;)

(For those totally out to lunch, Zwei is Two in German)

PlayStation Evolved
über PlayStation
PlayStation drei
PlayStation Remix

...
I understand it must be hard for sony PR to come up with another name then PS3

That PSX/PSOne sure has some crazy staying power. It's a market all in its own, it seems.

PS2 will most probably be even bigger than that,
impressive run for Sony

I could also imagine the opposite, whereby the PSOne lives on, but PS2, PS-n, etc. simply passes on whenever the next revision shows up. Naturally, whoever is developing on a PS2 would want to move onto the next iteration when it becomes available. PSOne, OTOH, is powerful enough to continue running the most basic of games, and will continue to become more and more compact in form factor. It looks like it is going in the direction of the Gameboy. Powerful enough to do any sort of mini-game you can think-up, huge standing library of games, huge effective userbase, easy and well established to develop for in this day, etc. The perks just don't stop... This is for all the games that are simply fun to play for as simple as they are, and there is no great incentive to eek out n-th degree graphics that are state-of-the-art for the existing hardware generation.

But why would Sony or anyone continue with the PSOne, when, when the time comes, they will release a miniversion of PS2 for $50-$99, which would do everything PSOne does, plus what PS2 does?

Imagine the PSTwo - tiny, cheap, tons of PSOne and PS2 games, DVD playback... PSTwo will outsell Xbox 2, wait and see :)

impressive. Don't forget though this is the only console selling so much longer into the life of another console . Its also still getting new games here in the states. No other console has done this . They stoped making games for the supernes a year after the n64 came out.

Wrong.

Saturn had a fantastic Japan run... there were still Saturn games being produced after Dreamcast's release.

And AFAICS, the last few SNES games were released within 1-3 months after N64's launch, not a year.

Um how am i wrong .

How long were games coming out on the saturn when the dreamcast was out ? More than a year ?

Okay so i gave more time on the snes . I was using a year as an average . How many years after the launch of the ps2 is the psone getting new games released and new hardware produced. Now how about other systems.

...because it gets the job done- little handheld games. By time there is a miniversion of PS2 for $50-99, there will be a mini-mini version of PSOne for $10. There just isn't any point to upgrading your development costs to "PS2 levels" to pump out a PS2 "handheld" title. If the PSOne gets the job done and the development is dirt easy and cheap, developers will continue making PSX titles as long as there is a demand. Put simply, you don't fix something that isn't broken in the first place. Anybody familiar with the technology behind a Gameboy (seriously, I'm asking)? It's probably not rocket science componentry, but it remains a wild success to this day. This gaming genre revolves entirely around quaint, addictive gameplay, not hardware-oriented feats with gameplay spackled onto it.

GBA uses a 32-bit ARM... 7? At 12MHz... and doesn't have dedicated 3D hardware.

2D-only graphics, but more capable at scaling/rotation than SNES's core - it can do multiple planes, and isn't restricted to only backgrounds.

Sound chip is a joke, though, compared to even SNES...
