"PSX" production stopped since the beginning of April due to high inventory, and unclear when the production will resume...

Well, looks like SCEI has to revise its plan of launching PSX3 as $740 all-in-one wonderbox, since even the Japanese market rejected such device. But SCEI has no more room to cut back and can't take losses on hardware due to its depleted cash reserve thanks to CELL.....

Where do I start?

First off, it hasn't been proven that it'll be a 740 dollar all in one machine. All we have that points to that is basicly your speculation.

Second, just because they lost money last fiscal year doesn't mean they are running out of cash. It just means they have less. Becides, Cell is going to be used in multiple things, remember?

Third, the production of the PSXs was only temporarly stopped. It could start up again on next Wensday at 9:17 A.M. Japanese time.

When PS3 launches in the US at a price of 300 dollars, DM will claim that it is only because of PSX's "failure" at 500+ dollars.

We'll see. Devices like this don't tend to sell in high volumes, so it would be quite easy for over-eager Sony execs to expect more and over-produce.

I'd be much more interested in seeing what it HAS sold and in what months than a report like this. "All-singing, all-dancing" machines are cute, but high prices mean low volume; companies have to figure out how to get them to work the best.

They're useful enough for marketing purposes, as well as just having "more options" for folk, though. nVidia and ATi aren't going to stop producing their high-end cards simply because the mid- and lower-end lines sell at much higher rates, nor will the concentrate solely down there. I don't suppose other companies will be "scared off" by lower-volume sales on high-end devices... it's par for the course. They have to make and place them intelligently, and not over-estimate demand.

It's possible, however, as I've been wondering before, that the Playstation branding will keep high-end techs-types away from considering the machine a "serious device" just as the price point would scare off gamers, in which case they have their brand name in each area working at cross purposes. We'll see...

Chances are they'll adjust their price points accordingly and settle onto the plateau--knowing what sales to expect--and also know how to launch another machine of its type better. (And if the public is indeed choking on the cross-branding, they'll know better how to make and market it, or if they should resolve to keep them separate in the future.)

We'll see.

When Nintendo 'stopped' the production Gamecubes, was that also because it didn't sell due to it's 'high price'? ;)

Because of poor sales? Get your wires checked Deadmeat, there's some rat biting on them or something...

Well I suppose no matter how you look at it PSX is selling a lot worse then Sony expected.

PSX was a great idea with the worst execution.

I don't recall the details but buying a product labeled
"It can do everything...!"

Then opening the box and seeing another label,
"...once the needed firmware is availible!"

"Enjoy your new PSX which will play DVDs and PS2 games. We know the PS2 already does that. But it's 4 times as pretty and priced to prove that. So just imagine the firmware possibilities and enjoy your PS2, err X!"

This does not inspire consumer confidence or owner satification.
Despite liking Sony.
I dislike the way it has managed the PS2 and PSX.

Back when the PSX launched there were many people here claiming it to be the cheapest DVD recorder available. I guess after I posted the competition's HDD-based alternatives a few weeks ago, consumers are taking notice...

It is still a very cheap HDD/DVD recorder, and this kind of stuffs have never sold a lot.

All in all, the execution is pretty bad, you can see the laundry list of problems (even after the latest 3/31 update).

It has indeed gone out of my expectation :)) just a little bit over my expectations, bad execution on cheap gimmick products like I said before), and indeed I read about it on 3/27 on a Chinese forum about the news on "Nikkei Shimbun". I was just wondering when will people post this as I was too lazy to dig the old "PSX details" thread out.

From DCharlie at GA Forum

"Time for another PSX rant :

Well, the biggest issue (IMO) is the total lack of cable support coupled with the absolute shocking fact that you can only take line in from RCA.

EVEN THOUGH THERE IS AN SVIDEO INPUT(!!!!)

So if you have cable/non-bs satellite, then you are basically going to be HD-Recording a shitty signal and you can't use any sort of automated recording.

The DVD record speed was also a total distortion. I remember people going "HOLY SHIT!!! 24x DVD Recording!!!", but when it came out it only initially had "8x DVD recording" - but - the speed is IN COMPARISON TO CDR speeds. So - 8x DVD = 1x DVD.

Under the first drivers - it took an age to burn a DVD
Under the second drivers - it took 5 minutes less than an age to burn

When playing games and swapping out back to tv , the whole system has to reset itself. You can't play another game or move through the menus for around 1-2 minutes.

The Atrac burning speed is pretty slow.
MP3 playback is supposedly added, but that doesn't seem to be true either.

Switching channels sometimes means that sound is dropped altogether and the unit has to be reset. (This happens pretty often)

the location of the ports is a good idea (hide them away from the sleek from system) - but the ridge around them makes it a pain in the arse to plug/unplug stuff. Granted - you shouldn't really be doing this.

I thought the pad that came with the PSX is already busted. The left shoulder button is flakey, and the right analogue stick keeps playing up.
Plugged in a different pad and the same issues existed. Hmmm. Seems to be very tempremental.

Has a nasty habit of ignoring the fact that i chose the Foreign language track for certain broadcasts, meaning i have quite a few films recorded in Japanese. . The new drivers apparently support dual language recording.

Forget to set up your 40gig PS2 HDD part. and you have to delete your entire HDD contents.

About a minute wait before the unit actually starts to play a PS2 game.

etc etc etc...

It's a nice idea, it looks slick, it makes part of my life easier (recording late night anime and stuff) , but if i was to go back in time i would advise myself to put the extra cash to the cost of the PSX and get a proper HDD recorder."

Another from him.

"one thing i did read (don't have the source) was that they expected all the glitches and patches to be installable and the machine to be fully functional at the specs/abilities that were announced pre launch near the end of the year (!!!!!)"

I expect dual layer standalone DVD recorders at the end of the year ;)

I don't think the PSX will have dual layer recording capability with a firmware upgrade. It's probably a good idea to stop production of PSX.

I don't expect them (standalone recorders) to be cheap enough at the end of the year. Dual layer PC recorders will still be pretty new around the end of the year (I am waiting to buy one), Philips said around mid 2004, BenQ has an upgradable drive that said the firmware upgrade will be available in Sep. Don't know about others. 4.3GB is not quite enough to backup D-VHS shows, and 8.5G is just a bit better.

I also heard that Pioneer's DVR-A07 PC burners will have a firmware upgrade that will allow DL burning too in the future which is pretty cool.
