PS4 Neo naming impossibilities *spawn

If it's really going to be called PS4k it's major misleading advertising, has no one mentioned this? It has double the flops of PS4, but 4K is 4X as demanding as 1080P, not 2X. Plus the memory bandwidth only increased a little, memory quantity not at all, etc. A PS4K should be at least 4X PS4 theoretically. Then we have news Sony is mandating minimum 1080P on PS4k, which all but says 4K isn't in the plans.

I mean, it's going to be the most un-4K thing with a 4K label ever if that pans out. Although, I guess, Blue Ray playback?

Because it hasn't been called 4K and that's only what the Internets has been referring to it as (after trying PS4.5 for a spell)? No-one's raising complaint about other possible names either. Besides which, how much does naming really matter? 4K itself isn't even 4,000 pixels in reslution!

In the case of WiiU, it mattered a lot.

But there were other factors. It was poorly unveiled, poorly advertised, had few compelling software titles, 3rd parties dropped it quickly and its core "gimmick" was almost a total waste.

the way they market the name also important. they want to avoid any confusion that a complete opposite of their message (like people thinking New PS4 cant play old PS4 or vise versa)

I'd say Wii shows otherwise. The Internet derided that name, but it took off and was adopted none-the-less. But my point is really that people don't rely on the name to tell them what a product is or should do - a GTX950 isn't assumed to be faster than a GTX780 becuse the number is bigger. A Citroen C4 or Mazda CX9 have meaningless numbers. The 4 in PS4 simply means the fourth iteration, so where a letter suffix may imply a resolution, that's not intrinsically part of its meaning unless the marketing message was as such. So PS4K ends up just being a model number. If it ends up being called that, which I doubt it will because it's not a great name. PS4 Neo works better and fits in with other device naming (secomdary name for new model).

Ultimately, it's a pointless conversation until the actaul name is revealed, which is why no-one was talking about it!

PS4K/Playstation 4K sounds too specific to me...implies something directly in the name that may not be entirely true or confuse consumers. I'm expecting something more general like PS4X/Playstation 4X.

Or hell, if they are bold enough to release this new console by itself and do indeed discontinue orginal PS4 they may just called it Playstation 4.

How about "PS4+4 because AMD really need a fresh piece of our pie". (also because it's basically double a standard PS4 in flops.)

I feel like the power bump and the min 1080p mandate is exactly about hitting a 4k output. If most sub 1080p games ( few on ps4 ) can reach 1080p, and the already 1080p ones can get to something around 1440p native, that's more than enough for an upscaled 4k ready game. Drop in some clever temporal reconstruction, or custom MSAA resolve and the upscale can look even closer to that 4k advertized in the box.

If, on the other hand, the name comes out to be the much better and mor marketable PS4 Kaio Ken, all they need is a bunch of memes and gifs of sony top executives pre installed and it willl be good to go.

I agree that we will see some games running around 1440p. Especially older PS4 games that are patched with a neo mode. Some newer games might be 1440p with dynamic resolution.

However, I still think if they go with "PS4K" they will lose some consistency in their naming. If they go PS4X, future names are simple ie PS4X -> PS5 -> PS5X...

Look at how Xbox naming has gone...all over the place...

PS4 : Better Edition

Incidentally, I like that way that for the 360 MS chose not to call it "Xbox 2" because that would imply inferiority to "Playstation 3". So what did a different bunch of managers do this time? Called it "Xbox 1".

Oh yeah, that's an idea. Sony should call it "PS4 : 2"

Definitely not PS5 as that implies PS4 is outdated and last gen. I'm pretty sure it'll be a PS4 something as that's typical. PS4 Neo, PS4 Plus, PS4 Beat, New PS4. Keeps it in the family.
