Pioneer Kuro Pro110 vs Pioneer 5070

If you read my Sony 52XBR4 vs Pioneer 5070 review thread http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=46091 you'd know that outside of a resolution jump, I was not happy with the XBR4.

So the itch started and I got a Pioneer Kuro Elite Pro110. The Kuro's are clearly well loved and I've always been impressed with them at the Magnolia section in Best Buy. However as most know that a set can transform a fair bit once calibrated and in your home. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Well, let's get this out of the way. The Pro110 is heads and shoulder above anything I've seen to date.

Black levels: It's a massacre. The shadow detail and dark levels on the Pro110 make the 5070 look outright bad. Keep in mind I have a very dark room thus black levels are obvious. The Kuro does not go pitch black. There is a slight glow on screen but you see it only after your eyes have adjusted to the dark room and no content is on screen.

White levels: The whites on the Kuro are fantastic. They are pure white. The 5070 tends to turn whites a bit yellow in certain situation but no such issue on the Kuro.

Detail and sharpness: The difference is just as great as the black levels. The picture on the Kuro is really smooth with a real looking through the window effect.

Colors: The Kuro Elites are famed for their amazing color reproduction and accuracy. This much is obvious during my Hi Def media viewing.

For the lazy: The 5070 in no way shape or form can hold it own against the Pro110. In every category the Pro110 destroys the 5070. In some places it's close, such as Standard def processing but everything else, the Kuro puts the 5070 to shame.

The Pioneer Kuro Elites are the best display on the market, period. Are they worth the price? That is only something you can determine. If you're a videophile with a growing collection of Hi Def media and watch most of your TV in HD, then it's easy to justify, given your budget allows for it. If you're new to HD, don't like tinkering with electronics and have casual knowledge of display technologies, then it would be tough to justify a Kuro Elite.

So the big question remains: unlike the Sony 52XBR4, will I be keeping this set!? The answer was a YES! before I found out that the upcoming 9th gen Kuro's will once again have 80% better blacks and cheaper prices! But oh it will be painful to return this set and go back to the 5070. Very painful.

All the viewing was done with Planet Earth HD DVD which I am very familiar with.

I can't even imagine what that tv would cost over here. Over here you are looking at $5k ($4k US) for something similar to the 40" xbr4/xbr3s. I paid $3k for what I guess is an xbr2 in the US (high end but not 1080) - this was *cheap*.
I looked for kuros, and could only find 1024x768 40"s. They started at $7k.

Lol.
I found what I think is the PDP-5010FD 50" for sale here.
The 5010 is $3800 USD on amazon, which is $4300nz.

The official NZ price from Pioneer....

$14k.

:(

lol wow! 14k eh!? Pioneer really needs to get a clue on pricing! and it'd seem with the 9th gen, they're starting to. MSRP of the 5020 (1080P 50inch set) will be $3500. Now that's a good deal!

I'm buying the 60" Pioneer Kuro Elite Pro-150FD. Price for it, with my friend's discount, is about $4,900.

No review I've seen to date has anything coming close to it.

At this point you might wanna wait for the 9th gen. Just like from the 7th to 8th gen, 80% better blacks and a better color filter.

Thats the main reason I havent bought a set in the last few years. We want to get the best, just hate seeing it being bested within a year.

The current 8th gen is VERY good but pricey. The 9th gen will be better but the difference won't be a s dramatic like the jump from 7th to 8th gen. However the price will come down greatly. The 10th gen will be the pitch back sets with immeasureable contrast ratio and other features. However, I expect the price to go back up for those.

RobertR1,

as I new 5080 owner I can attest to how good the Kuro's are at black levels and color accuracy. So far I have been loving mine. I have it to a comcast DVR to get their HD. As well as an xbox360 ellite and a PS3 via HDMI. I went witht he 5080 (which is their 720P model) due to the fact that the way we have the living room set up its about 11 feet away from where the we sit, and thats too far to reap the benifits of 1080p. I was going to wait to save money for 60" but Best Buy had a killer sale on them a week or so before the super bowel and I walked out the door after only spending a bit over $1800 and change. At that price I could not pass it up :)

The 5080 is a killer set. My buddy really wants my 5070 (like yesterday) so I might end up getting a 5080 till I can get a 60inch 9th gen. $1800 is a STEAL! the best deal I can find on the 5080 is 2k OTD :(

That's mindboggling cheap. It's 2.5x that here in Denmark ($4850) even without our 25% VAT it's still twice the $$$

Cheers

Yea I know it was a steal...still the large room just wants the 60" instead. However my wallet says "HELL NO" :)

Yeah, that's why we went with a SXRD over a year ago. Wanted a 60" to fit the room, and rear-projection was the only sensible decision.

I didn't even know plasma would get so black. I just wrote off the rumours as more hype. Even now, a Samsung LCD with a 15,000:1 contrast rating is only a tenth of that measured. Who knew Pioneer would actually pull off a real 10,000:1 contrast, or that the 60" would drop in price so fast?

(IMO $4.5K is pretty cheap for a 60", but yeah, still a lot more than $2K)

I think the contrast ratio (and "true black") is over-rated. I have an 8000:1 LCD (dynamic) and the blacks are often *too* black for me sometimes. It's nice to have high contrast ratio, but when it means I can't see detail in sections of certain scenes I find it to be detrimental to image quality.
