Pictures/Details Of The New XBL Dashboard Update (125 Improvements)

Ok..so I guess it's not too early to get started on the next list for the MS team:

- A thin API layer to support KB/MS in games.
- More uniform support over the VGA cables. Currently most games add black boxes to games at 1280x1024 (i.e. a faked 720p widescreen) but a few do not do this (e.g. PGR3) and get stretched and distorted. Considering the wide adoption of 1280x1024 LCDs and how poor they look at non-native resolutions this would seem to be minor request. (The good news is if you use a CRT you can squash the screen and get it close or run at 1024x768 in these games, and they all add the black bars... I don't haev a 360 but I had a couple friends test a number of games for me to get to the root of this issue)
- Get it over with, add advertisements, and make Live free
- Remove the size limit on XBLA games (50MB right now I believe)
- Add a stripped down browser
- Add MC support for XP so people don't need to buy a MCE PC to link to their Xbox 360 to use the media center extensions

Oh, and the FF wheel and camera (face mapping!) cannot get here quick enough :p

Bro, how can you want it to get here quick enough, and you don't have a 360. :D Either way, I concur they can't get here quick enough, because I might actually be able to play PGR3 finally. Amazing that the government spent so much money teaching me off/def driving and how to shoot, yet I can't play racing or FPS to save my life, amazing...

-Improved voice quality when connected through wired gamepad

Is anyone else reading this as "worse voice quality when using wireless gamepad" or is it just cynical ol' me?

Also, they should add the ability to output 480i when using the component outs of the HD pack, this would give users the option of using the deinterlacer in their HDTV if it does a better job than the 360.

I don't know about anybody else here, but why the hell make this available on 6/6/06 at 6?

Damn is MS the devil? I'd push it out on 6/7/06 just to make myself feel better.

Who would have thought five years ago we'd be all excited over a software upate to a onlinegaming service.

Shows how well Live has done, I guess.

When outputting 480p the console certainly isn't internally deinterlacing any originally interlaced source. Frames are rendered at 720p and then downscaled to 480p for output. How outputting only a field per frame and upscaling these fields in the tv might lead to improved image quality is really beyond me.

For those that are still awake, the update is out. I dled it, then turned my system off due to dling most, if not all the available content on xbl...

I just got it as well......

Interesting when mine "rebooted" after the update I had no display....I could hear stuff going on (signing in to Xbox Live, Friends signing in, moving around the blades, etc...). I turned off the unit and turned it back on and all was well.

I run my 360 at 1080i if that matters.

Hmm, I didn't have that happen, but I am running at 720p.

I got it too.

There's nothing I want to download that bad right now.

The available demos, videos, etc are organized a lot better. Now instead of 200 files in a list, there might be like 26.

That's all stuff that coulda been done ages ago, though. That's why I'm not sure I'm big on say, the biannual updates, versus just fixing little stuff constantly. Look at some of Hardknocks smaller concerns. Those are things that could be fixed easily, but now he will have to wait six months.

It also highlights the lack of new content lately. Get some new stuff up already MS! Ah well, supposedly a wave is coming.

Man it's weird, but Live! gives me that distinct webtv feeling sometimes (as an old former web tv user) . That static picture of Nacho Libre right now..I dunno, they could liven things up a bit, get a little animation going. I dunno.

I'm thinking the TV just didn't sync with the signal properly and switching to a different input and then back may have cleared it.

Oh well...all is good.

So true, you'd think the 360 would be able to displayed animated .gifs and the like. Seems like a nobrainer.

agreed - Why the association with "6"? But then Sony produced "DaVinci Code" so who knows right? ...

I meant this for DVD playback only, where 480i is the native signal. That definitely wasnt clear in my post and the technical ins and outs of DVD playback is not common knowledge, apologies.

Streamed music is working perfectly, oh the joy and the music player from the blade works the same as Select Music from the Guide button, which was rarely the case before the update. Also, it looks like my gripe about add to playlist has almost been perfected so I am happier about that.

Actually, almost all DVD material is progressive in nature due to film stock being "progressive". Pornos and some video special features can be encoded in interlaced format, but it's the exception, not the general rule.

And as for the date nonsense... Do you seriously believe in that crap? Don't be a bunch of eejits, it's only 666 today if you remove 5 numbers from the ACTUAL date, making it even more bunk. I'm sure hoping nobody thinks it'd been better to delay for a day and release the update tomorrow instead.

You wait until 6:66 this evening when the world ends, then you'll be laughing on the other side of your face...

Actually, the old 666 thing is even more bunk because it's a way to identify the Beast, and unless the Beast is a Tuesday the date isn't an identifying mark. The Beast being a Tuesady?! That's ridiculous. We all know the Beast is more likely to be a Monday than any Tuesday.
