NV30=GeforceFX? Guess we'll find out on Monday..

xbitlabs just put these news out, and judging by the numbers of "can't process directive" messages I was getting, their server must be getting hit by the hordes of DOOM(-anticipating, news thirsty, pc gamers)..

I suppose the naming won't mean much more than recognition and the likes, but I was so eager to see if they could make another successful brandname.. :-?

Sounds too close to GeforceMX. And what is the new MX version going to be called? GeForceFXMX? GeforceMFX (mutha-f'in-X) ?:)

I don't buy the domain name theory. GeForceFX.com is registed to Julie Larson @ yahoo.com in Campbell, CA which is no where near NVidia. Moreover, if you look at NVidia's other domain name records, the registration info bears no resemblance.

I think GeForceFX.com is owned by a cyber-squatter speculating on the name (predictable because of the CineFX stuff)

two possible names i know of and damnit i forgot one of them.... but the other was very descriptive of what it should *have been* capable of if they hadnt had to trim it down to get itout on scedule :( i was hoping it would be the Rampage / Sage of nVidia but it looks like it wont be (the dual Rampage / Sage board actually slaughters the R8500 and nears Ti4600 speeds, and thats not by any means final silicon or drivers :D ) but STUPID #%$^& TSMC couldnt get their friggin .13 together!!!!!!! grrrrrrrr.... oh well NV35 could be The One

I'm already expecting to be disappointed with the NV30/GeForceFX
(or whatever) - I'm eye-balling any reports on NV35, because THAT should be Nvidia's killer chip. like TNT2/Ultra, GF2gts/Ultra, GeForce4Ti were.

It's almost a safe bet that Nvidia's refreshes are the time to jump in.
Lets just hope they don't wait a year to 15 months to get NV35 out.

cinefx, geforcefx.. makes sense..

will nvidia be able to trademark cinefx though, considering there is a magazine of the same name ?

I thought that 3D mag is called Cinefex...

i would expect the NV35 to be very close (relatively) because there were a lot of features that were originally supposed to be on the NV30 that they had to scrap (due to manufacturing limitations?) and push back to the NV35. and, of course, most of the manufacturing issues should be worked out by the time NV35 is completed. if nVidia is smart (and im sure they are, they managed to kill 3Dfx) they will begin sampling on the NV35 very soon. AFAIK, the NV30 is completed and the only holdup is the ability to mass produce the chips. if that is indeed the case, the engineeers are not likely to be sitting on their laurels and are hard at work on the NV35 so that they can get it out ASAP and catch up with ATi's product cycle. i would expect to be holding a NV35 board in my little paws sometime in September 2003 ;)

And what, pray tell, are these features they've had to scrap? (Considering we don't even know what's on the damn thing yet, how do we know there's features that had to be scrapped and what they might be?)

take all the rumors which turn out to be false and pretend that they are real.

It does seem like NV30 has only 2 vertex shader pipelines though (assuming 200 MVerts/sec and 400Mhz). Not sure how this translates to >1.5X the performance per clock of NV25, but maybe each shader has more/double the math units of an NV25 shader?

What about gpu core clock? ;)

What were the most popular guesses? I remember "Eclipse" (somewhat anti-Matrox, mmm?) and "Omen".

If "GeForceFX" is the one, will we abbreviate it "GFFX" then? Doesn't quite roll off the tongue/keyboard...
