I was talkign to my friends today and alot of them are interested in the revolution .

Alot of them feel like it will become the new ipod .

The reasons are

1) Its small and sleek . You can easily hide it in your car and its not a pain to move around

2) it will be cheap

3) there will be alot of content cheaply in an itune market (perhaps the new single )

We are thinking with its low price it will apeal to the older generations that grew up with these games that htey can now buy easily and play on a system , it will apeal to young kids as it will be cheap and have years worth of cheap content easily purchasable . Parents will enjoy it because of the large base of learning software and software aimed at young adults .

For that to happen Nintendo would have to support music playback. Such a wacky and wild multimedia experience like that doesn't seem to be something Nintendo's in favour of.

edit: just realized that you used the ipod and itunes references as analogies :p

Errr your missing the point of the thread .

Not that it will be the next ipod in terms of music . That it will be the next ipod in terms of market sucess , becoming a sleeper hit and a strong selling system .

Also the ns5 will play music. It has a dvd drive in it .

edit okay saw u caught hte mistake haha

I don't think Nintendo's image is healthly enough to win them "ipod-like status". Ipod is popular based around marketing and image, and Nintendo have traditionally done both not-so-well.

Apple wasn't exactly a power house . They only had the imac that sold really well and basicly copied that over to everything else they started to make . But nothing hit like the ipod

I agree 100%.

I still don't think the iPod (or iMac) did anything other than market themselves well, and again, I don't think Nintendo market themselves well.

I think we actually need a little more information on what exactly makes it revolutionary and the kind of support it has before labeling it anything, much less "an Ipod like thingy".

Yea, what do you mean by the next iPod?

iPods are successful in that they became the standard to which all other mp3 players are judged against.

Do you think the Revolution will become this? (the standard to which all other consoles are judged against)

The GB line and soon GB Micro is Nintendo's iPod and the Revolution will be Nintendo's Mac Mini. 8)

GBA Micro is missing music playback IMO, Nintendo should've put some flash storage along with a USB port in the device. Unless they plan to release the Play Yan here at a low price.

I also hope Revolution can play movies and music from SD-cards, that shouldn't be too hard now would it?

Heh Revolution playing quality MPEG4 movies from SD would be pretty sweet. Nintendo will be launching the Play Yan when GB Micro launches. They might even have GBM/PY bundles.

As part of the "older" generation its great every now and then to pick up an old game things like galaga(the greatest game ever), zaxxon,yie-ar kung-fu...but there is a reason we know longer have most of the machines that played those games. They got repetitive and the game play compared to todays games is actually not that good, and all things being equal, we all wanted better graphics. What happens is, we remeber the games when they came out, and they seemed better than they actually were (by todays standards), going back and playing Contra can get old really quick. Also, you can go to a mall and get one of those funky little atari 2600 joystick controllers with all of the games on them or a NES/SNES controlled with their games on them. Besides we have had emulators for years, I cant tell you how many games I have on my xbox, and like I said its fun every now and then to fire up Samurai Showdown, but it doesn't hold me for as long as say Pirates! So the BC touting of the Rev seems overblown to me.

I like the prototypes size, but there is still no compelling reason for me to grab one, even as a second console, because it doesnt seem to offer me anything that I cant already get. I guess we will have to wait until we see just how cheap it is.

I don't find any entertainment in old games. New tech means more involving games. A friend bought Golden Axe for the Megadrive recently. It hasn't the appeal of a modern hack 'n' slash. Short of nostalgia value, for me personally, I have no interest in revisiting these games.

Well if you don't like Nintendo's games then you might not find Revolution worthy of owning.

I don't have as much nostalgia for the older games either. I think years of playing them on emulators and little teens wearing T-Shirts with my favorite game characters (do the math and they were 2yrs old when the game came out) has soured me. That and the games just don't hold my attention anymore. When playing an old 2d sidescroller I just don't have that "I have to see the next level" feeling. Besides years ago when I was playing those game I was imagining the games we have today. I won't go back.

GBA Micro also lacks the hardware to play MP3s and MPEGs at acceptable quality.

Anyhow, GBA Micro should have been half cell phone! Take that Nokia, and trendy pop culture!

BTW, how successful has Ipod been?

i think the revolution will do well...

it is positioning itself as seperate to the other 2, seemingly more "serious" consoles, and as such will appeal to a different market AND potentially be a more common 'second console'. What i mean by that is if someone owns an xbox360 for example, then he/she is arguably more likely to buy as the cheaper revolution as a second console which offers more different types of games than the more expensive (and yet more similar to what they already own) unit.

It is only the more hardcore gamers who can't go without the GT4's or Halos of this world who would be more inclined to buy the ps3 or x360 as a second console, and i think this is going to be especially true next gen as there already seem to be more and more big games going multiplatform (and those which aren't often have comprable games on other systems).

so whilst i don't think it is going to be the new ipod (ie take over the market and dominate all others) i do think the strategy is probably wise from nintendo's part.

The thread starter is wrong. His friends are too. I will bet $1000 that the NR will not be the next ipod.

Can Nintendo be the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles then? Massively popular, then overmarketted into near extinction, only to make a promising comeback years later, which is only to be ruined again by overmarketting of inferior products.

Mckmas: did someone hack your account? This post is flaming, useless and out of character. I'm disappointed in you
