Germans are indeed Europe's worst cheapskates... There seem to be symptoms of similar behaviour in other countries lately, too. Still, while Lidl caused a bit of a stir when it entered Nordic markets, its growth has been limited. The hypermarkets of the local players are getting the big money here. And, as the local market here is much smaller than in Germany, you can't compensate lower margins with higher volume as easily.
