Well, I guess the underwear protects the pants from the worst odors and body fluids. If you go with nothing under, I wouldn't want to wear the same pants the next day.

It doesn't look like it protects anything from the back hole though.

You obviously don't know much about women. You know, they are lubricated (it stops them squeaking when they walk). They get more or less lubricated depending on their time of the month, hormones, horniness, etc. Plus the seams on the front of trousers and rough material like denim are not always that comfortable against bare and sensitive female skin.
