What kind of player are you supposed to use with the file? All I get with the most popular ones are blocks and choppy sound.

i think that's Divx or something. plays fine by me

Any player will work I think, you just need the right version of the codec.
In this case that's XVid codec,which is notorious for having tons of problems because new builds for standalone install are released practically on daily basis.

Personally I would recommend this instead:

since it has an actual stable support for xvid included (plus I no longer need official Divx crap littering computer )

BSPlayer, one of the best freeware players out there. Never had a problem with it.
