MS Sued over Xbox Live

Microsoft, as a company that runs multiplayer game servers, is alleged to be violating these patents. It's not clear how they're doing so—the initial complaint provides literally no evidence of Microsoft's guilt. The filing instead describes the Paltalk patents and the dates that Xbox Live went, err, live. After five pages of this, Paltalk simply claims that "gameplay on the Xbox or Xbox 360 through the Xbox Live online gaming service infringes the Paltalk patents," then goes on to ask for a jury trial.

Do they honestly think they are going to win? What isn't suprising, the waiting 5 years after Live was brought online to file the suit. I would hope the judge and jury would laugh them out of the court...

Oh well another day in American Politics...

sounds similar to multicasting, cept there is a hold time for messages...dont think those patents hold much weight, imo

The part that is interesting is their claim that their tech is useful for games. It begs the question: Did any of the major MMORPG's that have came out use tech like it? And if so did they license it from Paltalk? Cause AFAIK what they described, in relationship with games, is exactly what any server side game does.

Surely with the power a lot of the multinationals have maybe some of them should, I don't know, team up and lobby the government to get the patent system sorted out. It's a Republican administration in charge to boot, they'd definitely listen to big business, they even start wars for them! (j/k)

The patent system in the states seems to be an absolute minefield of vagaries.

A lot of these big companies expolit the patent mess. Sure they get sued a lot, but they make far more money off suing others. As it is, these big multinationals have tried very hard to get Europe to side with the American way of doing things, which shows how much they value patents for anything and everything.

Well if they do end up paying off the company like Sony had to pay off the rumble guys, MS must be thankful that the Xbox business is many times smaller than the Playstation business... And especially the people using Live are much much less than people using Dual Shocks, so they pay off should be many times smaller.

What are you talking about? MS "paid off" the rumble guys as well. They wern't idiots like Sony. Also, # of users have nothing to do w/ the payout. It would all depend on the case itself.

Actually I think MS paid $26 million to Immersion for licencing and Stocks so they paid them off in a round about way. But yes Sony failed 3 times to get the infringment over turned and I think were ordered to pay $91 million dollars. Obviously Sony hasn't been willing to do that Microsoft were Sony has no rumble.

You think they'll disclose the actual number of users? That would be interesting, but I really doubt it. It's not necessary.
